When did you go back to work?

Recommended Posts

I am an Occupational Therapy Assistant and sometimes I have to transfer patients and may do a lot of stuff bent over BUT, a lot of my time is spent just doing activities with patients while seated at a table. Varies day to day, really.

So my question is, how long would I be expected to stay off work. I just started my job and wont have much time off. I was only planning on a few days...like surgery on wed, go back to work on monday. Is this feasible?

I had my gall bladder taken out in may on wed and returned on monday and was fine. Are the recovery times similar?

Any idea?

Stacie

You sound like a "tough old bird" like me - I had my gallbladder out when I was 23 - Had surgery Tuesday, got out of the hospital on Sunday, and went back to work on Monday.

With the band, I had surgery Monday afternoon (Dec 1), and went back to work Wednesday (Dec 3). I have a desk job, and had no problems - I was just a little slower that particular day when I was up and around. Because my doctor prescribed codeine for the pain, but I was not allowed to drive while taking it, I went to work with no pain meds.

It's really a personal decision, but you know your body and what you can "push through" comfortably. You'll probably want to limit your lifting and any strenuous bending or such for a couple of days, no matter when you decide to go back.

Good luck!

I'm a Nurse Aide in a hospital on a floor that cares for Trauma patients and CABG patients and I had to take off work for two weeks just to be safe. My Dr. didn't want me to get a hernia.

I'm a nursing student...not working yet but do have clinicals. My doc said many of his nurses go back after 1 week off. I truly don't think anything less than that would be prudent if you have an active job, which you MAY. The bending, any lifting over 10 pounds, etc will be hard...AND remember at first you only get liquids so your energy may lag a bit.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
