pre op diet necessary?

Recommended Posts

I am getting banded on January 20th. I have been on a Pre-op diet since January 10th. I have only had Yoplait Light (1-2 a day), sugar free drinks, Slim Fast Optima (1-2 a day), Sugar Free Popsicles, Cottage cheese and I can't stand the taste of broth. I felt like I was going to pass out a few days, but when I did I had a yogurt. Tomorrow I go for my Barium Swallow. I don't know how much I've lost but I think I may take in 700 Calories a day max. It wouldn't be so bad if everyone around me at work wasn't eating Hooters and Panera all the time, lol!

My BMI is 36 right now, 11 days into the pre-op diet. My highest BMI was 40.7 with no co-morbidities. My dr. told me on Wednesday that if I blow my diet for even one day between then and surgery (Tues 1/27), the surgery wouldn't happen. I have a very conservative dr. I'm surprising myself by saying this but I don't mind the pre-op diet. I'm down 11.5 lbs so that's 11.5 lbs the band doesn't have to help me lose. :scared2:

Sonya,

I'm being banded by Dr. Simpson on January 28th!!! They aren't requiring any diet or even testing pre-op. I go to a class on Monday afternoon, and I'll be going in early on Wednesday to have all of my testing done before my surgery. I think some of it has to do with dr. preference as well as insurance preference. Too bad we're not having our surgery together. :scared2:)

Dena:biggrin:

Thanks for all your responses, I just looked at my paperwork and my BMI is 43.1 , i'm seeing Dr. Terry Simpson in Phoenix , AZ. He has great websites if you do a search he's all over the internet , I hd a consult with another Doctor and it just didn't feel right, Dr. Simpsons was total opposite. They did both say I ddn't need to do the pre-op diet though, even though a partient at work refered me to the other Dr. and she had to do the diet. Do you all think it might have to do with conditions people have? I'm thinking maybe it wouldn't hurt to just do it anyway??? What do you guys use as your liquids? My friend told me about some shake that her sister n law used before gastric bypass surgery , go to google and type in "all the whey". I'm getting a bit concerned about the vomiting and the bile coming up when people to to sleep. Im trying to prevent illness not get ill. I guess i'm trying to convince myself. I have an appt with my primary provider to get a referal letter for the insurance. Thats about all I need. Anyway all comments are greatly appreciated. Thanks! Sonya

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
