Does Insurance Cover fills?

My insurance company said that they would pay 90% of the surgery after the deductible, but I am not sure if that means they will pay for the return visits for the fills or not. I had to have a procedure code for the surgery just for them to tell me if they covered it or not, so is there a certain code that I have to have to see if insurance will cover them?

Thanks!

Hi Kasey,

If the insurer covers the banding, they should cover the fills through at least the first year. Adjustments are a required part of the surgical followup routine for this surgery. That said, I don't know what the actual CPT code is for fills--there may not even be one yet because the practice varies so much. For example, there's a whole different pricing structure for one done in an office as opposed to one done in a radiology lab.

Have you asked your doctor about this? If the surgical practice has done more than a few bands, they should know the ins and outs of insurance coverage for fills as well.

Thanks Alex. I appreciate the information. I will have Blue Cross/Blue Shield in January. No, I have not asked the doctor, but I will when I go for the first visit. He is Dr. Bagnato in Albany, GA which is about 2 hours from me. Can you have this done in a radiology lab? That sure would be alot easier.

Your doctor will tell you where it is done. You certainly don't want just anyone messing around with your band, though. I just said "radiology lab" because if your doctor uses fluoroscopy for fills that's where it will be done, probably in a hospital setting. But it will be the one HE uses, no other.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
