help exercise question

Recommended Posts

I was banded on 10/22/08 and have been going to the gym on regular basis about 6 weeks now. I just saw a post on another website stating should not be doing situps? Anybody out there know if this is true.

I don't know if that is true or not, but I would ask my doctor. I am too scared to do a push up. I don't want my port to move or flip.

i didn't till several months out.

i didn't have "belly fat" and my port was attached right onto muscle - it was painful for a while.

check w/your dr.....mine said 10wks and normally you should be fine.

I waited about two months to do Pilates because I wanted my incisions to be fully healed.

i thought so too, but my doctor actually has us see a personal trainer (physical therapist for insurance purposes) at his hospital before the surgery, and then at 4, 6, 8, and 10 weeks post surgery. i have been to my 4 and 6 weeks after surgery so far, and at the 4 weeks is when he started me doing situps and pushups and basically a normal workout routine. i asked him about whether i should wait more for my incisions to heal, and he said that your body will tell you-- if it hurts, don't do it. mine didn't hurt (besides normal sore muscles after the workout), so i did everything. 61 situps in 60 seconds actually, if you want specifics.

Exactly! I did Jazzercise at about 5 weeks out and it HURT. So I stopped and didn't do Pilates until later.

My doctor told me I could do whatever exercises I wanted at about 3 weeks out. I figured my body didn't want to do pilates just yet.

I don't think my body wants me to do pilates, ever! i've tried it a few times over the past few years and WOW, intense pain every time... even without surgery! my trainer had me do the pilates 100 the other day.... i had to do it in pieces.

i did do this class once called piloga, a combination of pilates and yoga.... i loved that class. all the intense workout from pilates but broken up by some relaxing yoga.

Our pilates instructor is awesome. We alternate core strength work with stretching. But she also teaches a yoga class right after. Every pilates class I've done has put in bits from yoga though. Tell your trainer to do it too! :tongue2:

yeah my trainer kept making fun of it, he couldnt even get the name right-- kept calling it pill-yogurt? haha but hes this enormously buff guy that could pick me up with one arm, so i feel like even pilates is too easy for him.
