I wouldn't, but I would understand why people who have really long drives would...

I have a 7 hour drive each way and I would not even consider a self fill. I am also self pay and would be sooo afraid that Iwould mess something up, and our non paying insurance comapny states in their "official" hand book. They will NOT pay for any problems resulting from any type of weight loss surgery.. our savings are already depleted, bu teven more important , I would not want to take the chance of screwing something up.

I use my meat injector to self fill all the time. I fill it when I need to and unfill it when I wanna party. Whaooo

I fill it with whatever I have on hand. In Nov. I had the garlic butter sauce for the turkey, so I just went ahead and used it. Why waste?

First I rub an ice cube on my port area, then I rub some oragel on it. Then I let my hubby inject me cause I just can't do it myself.

I do admit the needle is way big. One time I actually had to give myself one stitch to close the hole on my tummy. I used some dental floss.

The tip of needle the doctor uses for fills is bent. I did have to take the meat injector needle and bend it before I used it. I took it outside and pushed it down on the cement till it bent.

This self fill method is really working for me. For Christmas I filled it with rum sauce from my bread pudding.

roflmao OMG this is hysterical thanks for making my day!!:smilielol5: So Denise have you ever tried a Diet Coke Fill?? Just wonderin if that would give me my soda fix at the same time!!! :o

LOL! these responses are cracking me up!

Ive often wondered why they didn't connect the band to a pump instead of a port.....then all they'd/we'd have to do is pumppumpump! filled!

Maybe they were afraid the overachievers would exhaust themselves with the pumping and blow out the band ???

I am thinking they would un-fill everytime they wanted to pig out and then re-fill the next day!! It would be slightly counterproductive!! LOL!!!!

Never in a million years. Thats why my doctor got paid the big bucks and their nurses went to training. I now work for my doctor and I have seen the results of patients doing their own fills. Too tight ~ part of their stomach's had to be cut out because it had died from the band being to tight.

It is so refreshing to see this post and with 7 pages!!!

Yes it is a serious subject but there are some out there that may consider this...

Why not make light of it and educate them at the same time?

Please don't ask if they are serious anymore....

Kudos to the comedians!

I dont know. Diabetics are able to self inject themselves and even children can administer their own epinephrin if need be. heck, even a drug addict can find a vein when they want to, (Not a good reference or recommendation,LOL) I have to really think about that.

The last time I got a fill, I asked my doctor if there was any way I could accidentally hurt my port (by getting laundry out of the washer, etc.). He said, "no, the only way you can hurt your port is by putting an unsterile needle in it". It was the first time I had heard of anything like that. I said, "people do that?".... he said, "you'd be surprised how many people have absolutely no common sense".

So no, my answer is no way - never.

self fill? really? that sounds really dangerous! I wouldn't even consider it...why do something so risky with your life? This is supposed to be about being healthy not taking unneccesary risks. I would assume somebody would be aware of the maintenance required with having a lap band before deciding to have a major surgery to receive it. Saving yourself a long drive is certainly not worth your life!

My husband is a medical professional. I am a retired LVN. We have a sterile huber needle on hand IN CASE OF NEEDING AN EMERGENCY UNFILL and my doctor not being accessible for some reason.

I might think about doing my own fill, but won't because that sterile needle must be saved for an emergency. Fills aren't emergency.. an unfill might be.

In my opinion people who self fill so that they can party have not made the commitment to the band and the lifestyle change. These are the people who will not lose the weight or gain it back and then want to blame the band. If I do this I’m in it full force….maybe self filling to party or eat more is why you needed the band in the 1st place.

I think there is too much at risk that is dangerous if you do not know what you are doing. Shoot my doc had a hell of a time finding my port i can just imagine me looking for it

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
