Hi All,

I was banded on 12/18. I went in for my post-op appointment on 12/24 and had lost 6 pounds. I was so excited I was finally losing weight for once in my life, but since then I haven't lost any weight. I'm getting so frustrated. I feel like it is becoming just another unsuccessful attempt at weight loss. Is this normal? I know I am consuming fewer calories than I was pre-op so I don't understand how I couldn't be losing. Could my body be going into starvation mode? Any

helpful advice is appreciated.

Thanks, Kelly

Well.....How much are you eating, Kelly? Before you get any fills, a lot of people have little to no restriction.....that makes it more difficult to get Portion Control in line. Also, I've found that Protein is very important for hunger control. Share more details, plz!

Honestly, I'm not eating that much. For example...yesterday I had a Protein Shake for Breakfast (typical breakfast), Campbells Tomato Soup on the Go for lunch, and about 1/2 c. mashed potatoes for dinner. I'm still in the soft foods stage so what I can eat is limited. Maybe I will try and focus on Protein at every meal instead of Soup and carbs (for lunch and dinner).

Try and focus on the Protein. That'll help. But don't eat anything that you're not cleared for. Are you exercising? Exercise, IMO, is one of the most important factors in weight loss.

Some of it is simply being patient....I know it's difficult to hear, but you're in a marathon, not a sprint (cliche' I know). 2 lbs a week average is a pretty fast weight loss, compared to unbanded folks!

I have exercised a few times since my surgery, but nothing regular yet. I will focus on Protein over the next week until my fill and see how that goes. Thanks for the advice.

kjp1012,

I did lose post surgery, too; then stopped. Right at the soft food stage, too. Did contact one of the support group staff at the hospital and went over my notes --

1. the soft mushies are going to make it harder to lose. Weight loss goes slower as your food consistency becomes more normal.

2. until you have a fill, this is all pre-treatment. It is great you are losing but don't worry.:)

3. Exercise does help (but with the ice, I had to alter my routine)

4. Expect to average only 1-2#/ week - that's an average, not an actual loss- i've been stuck for 3 weeks - but increased exercise and dropped calorie intake for a few days and It's coming off- slowly:smile:

Hang in there

Please journal your calorie intake. If you are below 1000, you probably aren't eating enough. I know it is hard during mushies to get enough "good calories" in. At this stage I would try to make some homemade chicken salad. Make it in the food processor and it becomes "mushy". If you go too long with your calorie intake too low, your metabolism will slow down.

Thank you all for your responses. I found a website where I can track my calories so I will start to do that. I have my first fill next Friday so hopefully I will start seeing some results. Thanks again!

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
