My band was too full once and I had heartburn issues. My doctor removed some of the fill and this resolved. If you force yourself to eat super slow you will fill up on much less food. I found if i put my fork down between bites it made a different. It seemed wierd at first but I got use to it. Try that and see if it helps. Also avoid high calorie liquid or semi liquid foods like juices and ice cream. I am a firm beleiver that calories should be chewed.

Thanks, I will try that... My heartburns issues seem to have subsided, I can just eat anything, even a hamburger.

Hi Alison,

I'm in the muddy waters between surgery and first fill.icon10.gif At first, while everything was swollen I ate so lightly that I lost 16 lbs without even trying. Now, the swelling has gone down and I'm eating more to reach satiation but trying to not gain weight until I get filled. I exercize 40 minutes a day.

Dr. Amson doesn't put any fill in at surgery and requires us to wait a full 8 weeks before the first one. So, here I am, trying to drink as much Water as I can between meals and watching the clock for mealtime. Actually, the morning is really easy -- it's the afternoon. I have a late lunch, wait an hour and then start drinking. By 4, I'm getting very antsy. By 5, absolutely starving. I make dinner at 6 and start nibbling what I'm preparing, I just can't wait. This is the hardest time of the day.

We've been told to eat three meals a day of 1/2 cup food, starting with the Protein and NO GRAZING!!!

Please, have you any suggestions?

Thanks,

Marilyn188icon11.gif

I saw that you are willing to be a mentor/buddy, and if you don't mind I'd like some advice and to ask you some questions.....

I have been thinking about lapband since 2007, yet I still havent made any moves towards having it done. I was about 240lbs then, and 3 years later I am now 270 lbs. so, I need to do something asap....What's your advice for someone contemplating surgery .....

-pros and cons?

-what was your diet like in the begining and what is it like now?

-how often do you exercise?

-did you have anyd difficulties?

-can you drink alcoholic beverages (not a big drinker, just curious)?

-did your insurance cover surgery, and if so what did you have to do for them to agree to cover the surgery?

Any extra info you would like to offer would be great! THANKS!

Oh Allison...boy do I need you!! I was banded in March of 2007. I can't believe it's been almost 2 years! I have only lost 36lbs. Either the band is not working for me or I'm not working the band. There aren't any support groups near me so I'm pretty much on my own. I don't know how to get back on track and stay there!!! If you are willing and able to be my mentor...I would be forever grateful!!

Sherri

Hello I had my band placed July 27th 2007. I started at 282 pounds and reached my goal of 150 npounds on New Years Eve. This has been the most wonderful thing I could have done for myself. If I can help please let me know how.

Oh Alison, you are exactly where I started, 282, and where I want to be. 150. I look forward to reading your advice so I can reach that goal as well. You are an inspiration for me. I have more confidence that I can reach that goal:thumbup:

Yes, I need some encouragement, please help.

My name is Teresa , I was banded Jan 21 2010, I was 217 and now only 194. I had my 2nd fill yesterday , it was 1cc. After the first fill one month ago, I did not feel any restriction, It was discouraging, even though I was eating low cal small meals, and exercising I struggled . Now , I am wondering if I need more than 1cc. If I dont feel restriction this time I just don't know what else to do... I am feeling pretty discouraged . Any uplifting words of advice you have I will appreciate.

Thanks

Teresa:smile:

HI Alison, would love a mentor! I was banded two years ago. I am down about 40 lbs but have another 45-50 lbs to go. I am getting back on track now after being off the wagon for a few months but at least I maintained, just didn't loose any for those months. I am always torn between a looser vs. tight fill as I fear if I am too restricted it will restrict the healthy food too much and lets face it some of the unhealthy food go down way too easy. I think staying a bit looser and really working at it is probably the better way to go. Any support and suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Would love a mentor!

I drink small amounts throughout the day. Always keep a Water bottle with you and dont drink after you eat/ If I do I always throw up.

Hey Alison! Congrats on your success! I hope to be able to say that one day!

So regarding the drinking. How long after your meals do you wait? Right now I'm holding off a half hour. I've only had my band for a week so I think it's doing pretty well (obviously I don't have any restriction right now so I'm trying to work it with willpower) and wondered if I should wait longer. Do you have a set time?

Ginger

I DEFINITELY need help reaching my goal..I was banded in June of 2008 and had to have my port replaced in June of 2009..I was beginning to really loose when my port started leaking. I changed doctors (for another reason) and the new one replaced my port. Since then I have not lost at all what I feel I should have..PLEASE HELP!!!! I AM REALLY GETTING DISCOURAGED and thinking I should have had the gastric by-pass surgery instead!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
