grapefruits?

Recommended Posts

I've never heard you couldn't eat them. I'm about to go eat a grapefruit in a moment. I'll let you know if I have an adverse reaction from them. I certainly will not be eating the skin, just the meat of the grapefruit. Just precautionary as I don't do well with apple peel.

Actually, my surgeon ENCOURAGED me to eat grapefruit for regular bowel movements. I've had problems with that since banding. BUT..... He gave strict instructions to peel the pithy skin off each section before eating it. He said that type of stuff is clingy and has a tendancy to get stuck. I've never had a problem eating grapefruit. I do the same thing with oranges. As far as BMs. It works like a charm!! (Sorry if that was to much information)

Ashley,

I tried both grapefruits and oranges for the first time since being banded and they are both fine to eat. I had no trouble. Chew, chew, chew.

Unfortunately food tolerance with the band is an individual thing. Some people can handle chicken...some can't, some people can do bread...others can't. The only thing you can do is to take a small bite and see how you do. Personally I can not eat citrus fruits, the juice is good but the "meat" gets stuck.

After first being banded, citrus fruit hurt my stomach...I don't know if it was the acidity or what...now, after being banded for almost 2 years....I love grapefruits and do just find...like Jodi said, it is definitely an individual thing...try it but make sure you don't get any of the stringy stuff or skin...it will get stuck.

I buy the refridgerated Delmonte pink grapefruit in it's own juice. That way I can have a few bites at a time and none of that white stringy stuff. My doc recommended it. I've had no problems at all. As a matter of fact, when I'm craving something sweet, sometimes having the tart grapefruit will satisfy the craving.

I am only 2 weeks banded. Diet says I can eat any fruit in its own juice. I tried pineapples yesterday, but was afraid it was too "stringy". Has anyone ever had problems with diced pineapples?
