Did you exercise today?

Bad news is I have the beginning stages of arthritis in my knees. My running/speed & distance walking days are over forever. He gave me a shot of Cortisone in my Left knee for now. It's helping with the pain (however the needle site is sore and bruised!), but he said it will only be given a few times before he writes that surgery is pretty imminent - in both knees in fact...

Good news is he has given the me the green light to resume my stationery bike and other exercises, as long as it doesn't require too much of my knees. I start again today, but I'll start light.

I'm sorry to hear about this LilMiss, I know how much you enjoyed your running (although I never understood it:biggrin:! Make sure you ease into your cycling and respect your knees - I'm certain you want to postpone the surgeries as long as possible!

No worries, and no excuses... I'll just have to work those calories in ways I may not be accostomed to - but I still have to do it.

Swimming. Swimming is a great way to burn those calories with minimal stress on the joints. Is there a pool near you?

My knees hurt sometimes' date=' I'm beginning to wonder if I should have them checked out.

Still exercising here, getting my dog walks in, but I have to admit my treadmill time is down. Only doing 2 to 2.5 miles on it right now. I've just been feeling tired. Maybe it's the extra walking, or the weather . . . (yeah I know, I'm making excuses ) . . . Michigan weather is rather gloomy this time of the year. I am soooooo done with winter, and we've a few months to go yet. Argh!

Right now my metabolism seems content with the 1000 calories I'm eating and the amount of exercise I'm doing. Gotta try something different.

[/quote']

Rhapsody - I know all about the weather glooms....I'm heading to San Diego next week, and I don't care if the temp is only 38 degrees - it will seem hot compared to this deep-freeze we've been in!

If your knees hurt - see the Dr. Don't wait, you might make things worse! As for the tm, keep at it...soon you (and I) will be able to put our bodies outside for those kinds of activities without wearing enough clothes to resemble the Michelin Tire or Pillsbury dough boy!!

I went and walked my two miles on the treadmill. I did a couple more miles on the stationary bike. It said I only burned 60 calories on the bike for those two miles. Of course I wasn't going very fast and the resistance was pretty low. It just seems that the treadmill-workout burns way more calories, even walking.

Just keep at it SHM. Remember you will burn a LOT fewer calories if you do some serious damage to your hips, so better play it safe now. Can you add some swimming to your routine?

As for me, at the Y today and did my lower body weight training and then the stationary bike for 30 min.

Hey ladies!

Thanks so much Rhap & Tap... LOL!! That means so much to know I have people behind me.

I do love to swim and I know the Y has one, so I may look into that.

SHM, hope all is well with you!

I'm reporting in my exercise done for today! I did a full T-tapp workout (50 minutes) while my toddler was napping. Yay for getting it done!

My book came today so I'll have to see what words of wisdom are found inside about running injury free.

I was going to get my x-ray on my hip done today but after the standard "Could you possibly be pregnant?" question I decided I'd rather wait until after I get my period this month to make sure I'm not. So I'll go in sometime next week probably.

I didn't exercise Wed/Thurs - having consumed only Water (and small amouonts of that) for those days, I didn't think exercising was a good idea!!!

However, back at the Y this morning, and did 30 min weight training (shoulders and traps), and 20 min on 'the wave'...just couldn't do the last 10!

I will be away at meetings for Mon/Tues next week, and then off on holidays for 10 days. I will only be checking in periodicallly, but please keep exercising and documenting...

I didn't do any exercise on Thursday or Friday. But, today I went running for the first time in a week and a half. I did 2 miles on the treadmill. I was honestly surprised that I could still do it, with no trouble. I had this fear that since I had taken a break, I'd have to start again from scratch almost! That wasn't the case thankfully.

So far my hip feels fine. I'm going to keep my distances down in hopes that it will stay fine. I need to go in Monday for my x-ray.

Ok, I've been ready bad the past few days. The treadmill is so lonely it's sending me flowers.

The most I've been doing is stuff around the house ~ Sit around it ~ walk around it ~ lie around it ~ :rose:

Ack . . . the above post was just for fun, lol! Been dealing with winter blahs, just trying to lighten up a bit. I hope I didn't kill this thread! Tapshoes will come after me when she returns!

Today I did give my dog a very short (and soggy, dang rain) walk around the block - only about 15 or 20 minutes. Not enough for her or me. She was rambunctious around the house. I thought we had a break in the rain, but it caught us when we were out. I also did some early Spring cleaning, that wore me out a bit. I did a power snooze, then did 2.5 miles on my treadmill. I forced myself back up there, because I've been off of it for a few days. But I'll never give up!

SHM, I'm glad to hear you can still do your exercise/running, without a problem! Maybe you just needed a break. I hope your x-ray shows good information. Let us know, ok? And thanks for sharing that Chi website - I haven't checked it out yet, but I am interested. Something different in my exercise routine is needed! Let me know how you like the book.

And just a little fun post script . . . since my dog wasn't able to get much exercise today (and I know there are going to be lots of rainy days to come!), I tried getting her up on my treadmill. I read about this in one of "The Dog Whisperer" books. She was nervous at first, but she did pick it up! She stayed on for about 20 minutes - much faster than me of course, and she was bouncy after, lol. I need that kind of energy. When I was doing my treadmill jog later, she came over and stayed by me. When I finished, I got her up there for my husband to see. She seems to like it now! It's so funny. Too bad there's not enough room for both of us together - that would be so fun, and really motivate me! :mad2:

I typed out a really long post on this thread a couple of days ago. I'm not sure why it didn't post. :tt2: Oh well.

I got my x-ray done and the chiropractor said everything looked fine and that I can resume training. Tell that to my hip. I did the two mile run last Saturday and again on Monday and by Tuesday my hip was really bothering me. So instead of walking like I had been planning, I went to the local hotel and exercised in the pool. I haven't swam for exercise before, so that was a new experience. I did all I could think of to get my heart rate up. I ended up being in the pool for 30-40 minutes. I didn't keep exact track.

So my plan is to run two miles once a week, and walk on the other days where I used to run. My hip was fine after one run, so we'll see if it can handle that. I'm also going to try reading and incorporating the Chi Running principles, but it's not an instant fix, so that will take a while. In the meantime I'll keep doing T-tapp on the days I'm not running/walking. I just can't let myself get out of the habit of exercising because of this injury.

My exercise has become so much harder since I haven't been running regularly.

I realized at 7 pm that I hadn't exercised today. I am proud of myself for getting dressed in my workout stuff and going to the gym. Ugh. It was hard.

I walked (briskly) for 2 miles and then did about .5 mile on the elliptical. (I don't get that thing.) Barely broke a sweat, but felt pretty good about doing it.

How are you guys doing?

Glad to hear the chiropractor said everything was ok SHM. But sorry to hear your hip is still troubling you! I think your plan sounds like a good one, take it easy and build back up to what you were doing. :o

As for me, I'm gonna have to build back up too . . . I haven't exercised in over a week. Not because I didn't want to, I have been ill with a very bad flu bug. I finally saw my general practitioner yesterday, and she gave me some good meds to help me feel better. I think I'm on the mend now, but oy, that was a mean flu! The body aches were awful, it hurt just to get up and go to the bathroom, let alone look at the treadmill, or think about going for a walk. It's been freezing outside.

On the plus side, apparently a fever increases metabolism - I broke my plateau again, and lost a few pounds. I'm close to getting out of obesity and just being "overweight". Just a few more pounds! But now that the fever is gone, I'll probably plateau again. Hopefully I won't gain it back, I'm really watching what I eat, and I've another fill appointment coming up in a week.

Last day of February! I just can't wait for Spring.

You're right, St Louis - tapshoes will dance on your head!!! I'm glad to see that postings continued, and of course now that I am back I shall monitor this (as well as report on it).

How I wish I could see a pic of you and the dog on the treadmill!

Glad to hear things are ok with the hip; now if only you could convince your hip of that! Swimming is good, and as long as you are active, that's the main thing!

Sorry to hear you were ill; glad to hear you are in recovery mode. As for the weather....#%%$%%#@$#^^$

I can't wait for spring either.

I mowed my entire yard and pulled a bunch of weeds. It was fun.

Mowing the lawn...I dream of when I will be able to do that - sometime in June perhaps! There is still a LOT of snow on the ground here...but only 6 more weeks and then it will be gone, and we can frolick outside. (That's my plan, anyway).

I went swimming 10/12 days I was on vacation, and did tons of beachwalking and shopping...surely putting on and taking off clothes thousands of times burns calories! When I was at my meetings, I used the hotel weight room, and did walking. So, I was active. Now back to the usual routine.

I'm 3 for 3 on exercising this week so far. Monday I ran two miles at the gym, Tuesday full T-tapp for 50 min, today I took the whole family (3 kids, dh and me) on a bike ride/walk/stroller ride for two miles. The kids' had sore bottoms from riding their bikes and my husband was surprised at the quick pace I wanted to keep. I guess he thought we were going for a leisurely stroll. Nope, let's go, Hon! 2 miles, baby. It was fun.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
