mlm 0 Posted January 4, 2009 Hey All, I am new here. I am over weight and it is getting worse. According to the websites of BMI .I am at 40.8 I am 2'3" and weigh 236. I am having trouble breathing and my hips and back constantly hurt. I went from a size 8 to a 20. I am so depressed. I live ina small town in Antigonish and I feel that this is not a topic a lot of doctors are comfortable with here and not familiar with,. How did you go about discussing the lapband with your doctor? Did he put you on a diet plan first ? How long did you talk with him about this before going the next step? What are the exact steps to take up until surgery in the province of NS? It wont be a while until I have this surgery but am interested about learning all I can now. Thanks, mlm
MacMadame 81 Posted January 4, 2009 (edited) I don't know how it works in Canada, but in most places, you do start by taking to your family doctor. What happens next depends on their own beliefs about WLS. One thing I do encourage people to do is to educate themselves and be prepared to fight the system. There are plenty of docs out there who are completely ignorant about WLS and will get in your way, if you let them. Coming to them educated and armed with data is one way to get around them. This is a great place to get educated, too! Edited January 4, 2009 by MacMadame
tapshoes 2 Posted January 4, 2009 Hi mlm...first thing I would do is check out the support thread for Canadians in this forum. Perhaps others from NS are there, and they can help you about specific drs, requirements etc. General education on the whole process - read and read and read and read...this forum, and others. If your insurance covers it, you will be further ahead than many other Canadians who have posted.
