band almost at capacity but I'm not

Recommended Posts

I had surgery 9/17/07 have only lost 45 lbs. and it's been a struggle all the way. I can eat anything and at too large a quantity without pain. My dr. says I have something called esophageal stacking which allows my esophageous to act like a stomach not good, though cause the esophageous to strecth, I am my wits end anybody with anything close to this, Dr.s office wants me to see a shrink, I'm considering a second surgery called mini gastric bypass, any suggestions are appreciated:mad::thumbup::thumbup:

1) 45 lb. in 3.5 months is actually a good weight loss especially with a band.

2) Esophageal stacking is bad news and can lead to bad health problems. Personally, if I had it, I would be asking about a revision to another WLS, not going to see a shrink. (Though maybe your surgeon wants you to go for other reasons?)

3) Mini-bypass is WORSE NEWS. The surgery is dangerous and people gain their weight back. The American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgeons does not include mini-bypass in their list of viable procedures and reputable docs don't do this procedure.

But there are other WLS types you can revise to such as the regular bypass, the sleeve and the duodenal switch. Since you have done so well with the band, I would consider a restriction-only surgery like the sleeve over something with malabsorption like bypass or the switch. But those others are viable options too.

Here's a chart that explains the differences:

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
