I have read in several messages that banded people eat Jerky. How is this possible? Jerky is dry and stringy. Is there something I don't know? I LOVE jerky and want to know if I will be able to eat it in the future...

This is something that to this day baffles me as well.

BUT I can only think of one thing that might do it .

I think Jerky has tenderizer on it when you dry it and that is what helps it not get stuck . Also you have to chew the crap out of it . I eat it all the time i buy it at Sams Club by the bags ! Its a good snack

i can also get them at my 24hr fitness - great snack! i keep them in the house & gym bag all the time.

I eat the regular old Jack Links Beef Jerky ! My son can eat a bag of them a day ( he's a 16 yr old ) so we go through quite a bit of them . I still to this day do not understand why they do not get stuck but they dont !

I was baffled by this as well. I actually got rid of 4 jumbo multi packs of my favorite turkey Jerky from costco pre-band thinking it was out of the question post-band. it turns out I was at least partially mistaken (thank goodness)

I have not tried regular jerky but have really enjoyed the tender cuts style. My absolute favorite is the Pioneer brand, beef terriyaki tender strips. A 1oz serving has only 60 cal. 1gm fat and 11gm Protein. I love the taste and tender texture and its even better because its a cheaper brand. My grocery store carries it but I have also ordered it online.

I may have to give this a try. I'm looking for portable sources of Protein for when I'm out and about so I'm not tempted to go off-plan.

I keep a bag of Jerky in my console in my suburban !

I eat it nearly every day , If I need something to "Snack" on I pull out a bag of jerky ! If we are on a road trip and we stop at a store( which i try to have it in the car already because its expensive in stores )

i will by it instead of chips or something.

It still does baffle me why I dont get stuck but even w/ pretty good restriction I dont get stuck

I buy World Kitchens brand at Walmart. 16oz bags are usually about $11.50, 80 cal, 11g Protein. There's many different flavors. I also order it on Amazon when I cannot get to a Walmart (yes, I live in the sticks!). I eat it daily for a snack and sometimes for a meal. Love it.

I get 3 of the HUGE bags of Jack Links at Sams for $9.00 They are not the "Sticks" but the regular beef Jerky .

They have several flavors.

I think they are around $5.00 a bag at stores.

I can eat them too with no problem regardless of restriction, they make a great snack. Not to mention, if you need something in a pinch and you are at a gas station . . . this is generally one of the very few reasonable options there.

I do like the Jack Links also, Mindy but found the World Kitchen a couple of months ago and like them a little better. Think it's the sweet taste. This afternoon I ordered quite a few different flavors from Amazon. I break them down into smaller bags to carry with me and to have in my truck.

Congrats on being a few pounds from goal. Great job!!!!

I too am a Jerky lover and not for the reasons most of the rest of you are. I do Research and Development work for Jack Link's Beef Jerky and I am a newly banded Man. I have been afraid to even try Jerky or Nuggets and even the Tender cuts. I will chew and taste and spit out for fear of getting hung up. This is where the band kind of gets in the way of a persons job but you have to do what you have to do to do to do your job. Lots of now Items coming out in 09 great new flavors in all varieties. Beef, Pork, chicken and Turkey. Soft and Tender for 09 So if you can eat the tougher items this will be a good year.

Beef Jerky is a High Protein and low fat anytime snack or Meal Replacement item. :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
