shrinking liver

Recommended Posts

Hi i have my op 21st jan, i have lost 9lbs so far & i have 19 days to go, i have made a start on my pre-op & i am using my treadmill & i go for walks with my hubby & dogs, but im so frightened after reading other stories about people not getting the op dne due to their liver not being shrunk enough?

How will i know if mine is shrinking?..Im following the solid pre-op diet from Derby..should i swap it for just liquids as thats all i hear others are on?

Debbie.

Hi Debbie,

I had my operation at Derby too. I followed the pre-op diet (mine was a liquid diet) for two weeks and everything was fine. You don't know if your liver has shrunk - just follow the diet that Derby has given you and all should be fine.

There's a thread for people who have had their operations at Derby at

http://www.lapbandtalk.com/f85/who-banded-derby-city-hospital-69940/

You've made a great start with your weight loss and exercise - well done.

It may be a new diet, but I wouldn't have thought so. If I were you I'd give them a ring or email on Monday to ask them. They are very friendly. Give Kay Cresswell a ring - she's the wonderful bariatric nurse. I'll PM her number to you.

ty steve for the pm, will contact her on monday..

on my letter is says this:

For 2 weeks prior to your surgery it is recommended that you follow a more restricted diet.

This diet is for 14 days ONLY before surgery & should NOT be followed any other time, as it is too restrictive. You may find rapid weight loss on this diet, therefore it is important to drink as much as possible throughout the day..

Recommended Menu:

Breakfast = a small bowl of sugar free Cereal with semi milk

or

1 weetabix

or

1 shredded wheat

lunch

1 medium slice of bread or 2 crisp breads/or 1 egg size potato or 2 tablespoons of cooked Pasta or rice

with

vegetables or salad 100g no fats/dressings

with

100g of meat or fish

or

cheese 50g

or

2 eggs boiled or poached

dinner

same as lunch menu

Miscellaneous allowance per day

1/2 pint semi skimmed milk

2 portions of fruit

1 light yoghurt

Water, tea, coffee, low cal squash allowed freely ( no more than 1 glass of fruit juice per day)

Thats my letter from Derby i got to follow...

i know lindsay is on maternity leave, so i will contact the others on monday, cos unless if anyone else is following the same pre-op diet then im worried as to why im not on liquids ??

My advice is to go with the diet as supplied by Derby. I have a memory of going on a liquid diet, but perhaps I was wrong. I certainly went on a liquid diet after the operation.

Your weight loss is amazing.. I am on practically the same diet as you were and was wondering the same thing.. I am sticking too it rigidly but panicking that my liver may be too big when they operate...

I am only on day 3 of pre op diet with 10 days to go.. am also getting banded in Derby.. :blushing:

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
