Hi All,

I am new here. I actually went to see my surgeon today to discuss surgery choices and to set a date for surgery. I have been leaning towards a bypass as I have high cholesterol and diabetes. I know that the bypass has a higher % of resolving these issues. When talking to my Dr today he did confirm that the bypass has a higher percentage however he felt because I have only 80 lbs left to lose that the realize band may be the answer for me. I said I would hate to have the realize band surgery and for it to not take care of the issues of the high cholesterol and diabetes.

So that all being said. I know the realize band surgery is a lot safer and less invasive. My question to all of you here at Lap Band Talk is, if you had these co-morbidities has the realize band surgery resolved your co-morbidities?

My doctor has left the decision as to which surgery I will have up to me. He said I am a good candidate for either surgery. I have had all my pre surgery testing and have set the surgery date for Jan 21st. Excited, nervous and confused as to which surgery to have:confused_smile:

I have type two diabetes and Ive lost 80 pounds in less than a year. I am still taking pills for my diabetes, but my A1C numbers are getting better. I did have slightly high cholestrol but that has been resolved with the weight loss and change in my diet. My surgeon wanted me to do the bypass because of my diabetes. He said I would lose faster and resolve my diabetes sooner with the bypass. I still chose the lapband because I didnt want to have the bypass it's such a drastic surgery. It is a hard decision. I feel I made the right one for myself.

Good luck.

Thanks Vballmom... Your right its a tough decision. I have thought about this for months and months. Now I am down to the wire (19-20 days away from surgery) and I have to make my decision its even tougher! I actually just had my A1Cand just with being on the pre surgery diet my #s have dropped down into normal range with taking my meds. My regular Dr said probably within days of my surgery(with either or surgery) I will be off the meds for that. My cholesterol too was alot better. I wish I has a crystal ball to see into the future.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
