Was doing great, now feel like crud

Recommended Posts

I was banded on the 12th, stayed home for a week to recover and then resumed my normal work and home life. Al of which coincided with Christmas and getting everything ready for the kids. My doctor had me on liquids for a week after surgery and then mushies, but his definition of mushies is very liberal. I thought I was doing great. Port site pain, mostly from picking up the todler, but that was about it. I have the realize band and have very little restriction at this point.

Then yesterday I ate a salad with grilled chicken. So all yesterday afternoon I have horrible heartburn and pain. I even came home early to lay down. Finally in the evening I started chewing tums, which eventually got the pain to go away around 10pm.

So today, I think I'm fine eating oatmeal, cottage cheese, stuff I know is good for the tummy. Then I went to the grocery store. I couldn't finish shopping, I had to go sit down while my husband finished with the groceries. I felt dizzy and a little sick to my stomach. I came home and immediately fell asleep for two hours. I woke up for a bit, then fell back asleep.

I thought I was back to 'normal' after the surgery, but now I'm not so sure. Its almost been three weeks and today I was pretty out of it. Has anyone else experienced anything like this? I want to think that all the excitement of the last few weeks just caught up with me, but I don't know. Thanks.

I have to admit that right after I switched over to mushies we had my brother in-law and his wife over for a BBQ. I took a hot dog and chopped it up and mixed it with some baked Beans. I didn't dice up the hot dog just like made slices. Well OMG I ended up having some serious stomach pains for the next 24 hours. It just felt like my stomach was on fire. Really kicked my ass for a couple of days too. I was stupid enough a few days later to try eating one of the left over hot dogs and guess what. That's right another bought of stomach pains. Well I think this is one way our bodies are telling us that either that food is no good for us or that our bodies cannot handle it. It just took a little time for the serious stomach aches to go away but it did and I feel great. But don't get me wrong it will be a long time if EVER that I try another hot dog. LOL

I really would chaulk it up to your body not being ready or able to handle that kind of food anymore. We have gone through some major changes to our body and it's going to take some adjustments. To bad that we have to learn it the hard way. LOL

Redmom, hope you're feeling better. I had something similar happen when I was on mushies... I guess I challenged the system a little too much by eating mushy spicy food (garlic eggplant). Felt fine while eating, but starting about an hour later felt like food was stuck and bubble in chest.... I ended up increasing my pepcid dose for a few days and going back to liquids and all was good and needless to say a lesson was learned about keeping my foods more bland. In terms of the fatigue I would be sure to hydrate aggressively and get some extra rest.

Thanks you guys! It really helps to know I'm not the only one feeling like this sometimes. Its all a learning curve for me. I'm being much more careful about what I'm eating.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
