How close to goal weight before PS?

Recommended Posts

I am just wondering if most of you were at goal or pretty close to it before having your plastic surgeries. I am approximately 30 pounds away from my goal. I desperately need a Tummy Tuck. I have had 3 plastic surgery consults and really want to have the surgery late February or early March because I want to be healed in time for summer. (My kids and I spend a lot of time in the pool). If I don't have it done by then, I would have to wait until September to do it when the kids are back in school. I have been told that I have about 12-15 pounds of loose skin that will be removed with Lipo and surgery. That would put me about 15 pounds from my goal. I really want to get it scheduled, but part of me feels like I should lose another 15 pounds first.

If some of you could share your thoughts and/or where your weight was when you had your surgeries, that would be great.

Cathy

Hi Cathy! I am seeing my doctor on Monday and have planned to speak with him about my options. I haven't had any consults with surgeons, but it is my understanding that the majority of them want us to be at goal weight for at least a year prior to performing surgery. I am only 2 pounds from the goal I set for myself and I believe that I have a good 10-15 lbs of excess skin on my tummy alone, this would put me closer to what the doctors charts say that I 'should' weigh. I feel fantastic, however, the skin bothers me a lot. I will let you know what the doctor says when I see him on Monday. Best of luck to you!!! If it were me......I would lose until YOU feel you are finished, then schedule your surgery.

The ones I've talked to want you at goal for 3-6 months.

This is all very different for many... I was told you should be losing less than a pound a month. Most your losses should be done.

But there are all kinds of reasons to have surgery when you deem it necessary.

If I wait a year my insurance and time off wont be covered due to changing jobs, so I'm jumping the gun a little. Is there a trade off? Probably, but those are decisions one makes individually with the consult of a doctor and your own personal needs.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
