I was banded 08/06 and was doing fairly well. I was overfilled for several months and was going out of the country, so I got completely unfilled (June 08). Since then, my mother was diagnosed w/ breast cancer that had spread to her liver, and she passed away Dec. 17. During this dilemma, I have gained TWENTY POUNDS!! How could I have let this happen?? Now I am too humilated to go back to get filled again. Someone please help me!!!

I'm so sorry for your loss! But to gain only 20 in all that time is not bad at all! Your surgeon has seen worse! Please just go back in and get going again. You'll feel better, and it will keep you from putting on another 20 (or more!) It's like not driving a great car because it ran out of gas and you're too embarassed to go to the station with a can and "admit" you let that happen! :)

I think we tend to be harder on ourselves than anyone else would. Your doctor may just be glad to see you, to know that you're coming in for a fill, and I know he/she will understand about the loss of a parent. I lost my mother when I was nine, to breast cancer which had spread. I was so young, but the pain is no less whatever your age.

Be gentle with yourself and know that you are taking care of yourself for you, for those who love you, and in loving memory of your mother.

Debbie

I am very sorry to hear about your mom. My prayers are with you.

Talk to your dr. and let him know what is going on. He is part of your support.

Continue to love yourself and take care of yourself(emotionally and physically).

I am so sorry you are going through this. I lost my mom nearly one year ago, it was very sudden and tramatic. I did not have the band at the time. However, I was eating healthy, exercising and losing weight. I had never felt better, well that all went down hill fast. I stopped working out and eating healthy, I totally went back to my old ways and gained a little weight back. It was June 08 when I had my surgery.

Like everyone else said, go in and get a fill before it gets more out of hand than 20 pounds. Take care of yourself, be good to yourself, I'm sure that is what your mom would have wanted.

Bless you,

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
