Lap Band Scheduled for February 2009

Recommended Posts

I've recently located this website and enjoy reading the posts. After six months of a medicallly supervised weight management program at UCSD, my insurance just approved me for a lap-band. Surgery is scheduled for February 2009 by Dr. Horgan. Would love to hear from others who had their lap band surgery done by Dr. Horgan.

:tongue2:

Welcome to LapBandTalk!

Where is CA is Dr. Horgan? I'm in NorCal and used Dr. Cirangle, with LapSF.

Oh, duh, I know that program. But for some reason I thought the doc's name was Hogan or Horan or something.

You should ask on the CA section and you'll get lots of responses.

Most people seem very happy with the UCSD program and the ones that aren't are unhappy because they don't like the university aspects of it -- seeing lots of different people who don't always know what you told the last person you saw (or act like they don't, anyway). But if you ask on the Doctors & Hospitals or the CA subforums, you'll get more detailed answers from people who have actually used them.

Thanks! Will do! I've been reading some of the complications people have experienced. Scary. Would be interested in knowing how many people end up having the band removed or experience constant vomiting one year out. Will post to the appropriate area. It's even more scary to think of having a heart attack or diabetes due to my weight. Thanks again!:)

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
