Pain in Calf, Right Shoulder, Back and Lungs

Recommended Posts

Before I can call my dr.'s office this morning, I thought I'd ask this question here. This coming Tuesday will be 2 weeks since I was banded. I started with some unusual pain yesterday and am wondering if it's the gas still working it's way out of my system or if it's a blood clot. First, does anyone know if after two weeks you can still be working the gas out? My stomach does still feel a little bloated too. I have pain in my calf, right shoulder, back (just above my waistline on the right and left sides), and pain in what feels like my lungs -- I'm coughing a little and when I breathe in deeply it hurts. I've taken some liquid tylenol which calms the pain a little bit and helped me get some sleep, but not much. Please let me know if you've ever experienced this and what it actually was! Thanks!

I havnt had my surgery as yet, but had many other operations, though it still sounds like trapped gas, as they have to pump you up with surgical gas to operate easier, & my surgeon used to say to me the quicker you can walk/move about after surgery the gas will release quicker, i have had that severe pain in my shoulder before & i am going to do all i can this time round to get rid of much gas as i can quickly but safely

In my opinion when some one is in a lot of pain, it is always good to get professional advice, They are the experts not us, we can only tell people of our experiences, its just a call ?

good luck & hope its just gas & you will feel more comfortable soon

Call your doc. It can't hurt...that's what he's there for. Don't put it off!

I agree with RestlessMonkey, call your doctor.

It seems a little unusual to have pain in those specific locations at 2 weeks out. Usually those of us who still have pain have it mostly around the port area or in the left shoulder/neck area. It seems like 2 weeks is a little far out to still be getting rid of the gas you would have received at the time of surgery.

Call your doctor. That is what they are there for.

As far a calf pain, I had that for about 1-week off and on. My doctor told me to increase my Water intake, which I did and the muscle spasms in my longer legs went away.

As far as gas pain. I still have gas, but it is not from the gas that they punped into me at the time of surgery. That gas is gone. I do have gas pain from food intake. I walk alot to get it out.

Not being able to take a deep breath would be a reason to call the doctor. Maybe some of the anestesia is still trapped.

Well, I wanted to give you an update on what happened to me. I did call the dr. Monday morning (Dec. 29). He had me rush to the hospital because he feared it was a blood clot. After an ultrasound and a CT Scan it was confirmed that I had a blood clot behind my knee and two pieces had broken off and each one had travelled to both of my lungs (hence the pain in my back and shoulder). I am now on coumadin for 6-9 months and just have to take it easy. The pain in my back and shoulder are gone but I still have severe leg pain which they say will go away in a few weeks. I just got out of the hopsital yesterday (Jan. 3rd) -- what a long time to spend in a hopsital! They think the clot was beccause of the Lap Band Surgery. You see where I live we've had a really bad winter already and we've been housebound a lot! Both my husband and I thought I was walking around a lot. We even were out the day before all this happened with my kids. I guess even though I thought I was walking a lot I should have walked more -- lesson learned! I'm just glad I called the dr. when I did. Listen to your body and if you have any unusual pain or problems don't hesitate to call your dr.!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
