Just wondering about the chance of getting approved without the 6 months of supervised dieting? I have a BMI of 54 for more than 5 years. I haven't really done any dieting since the birth of my son. He will be 2 in April. Thanks.

Well, you need to check the requirements of the insurance. I have UPMC and they require a 6 month diet, fitness, etc. with no gain. If your insurance requires it, then it needs to be done to show you can change your lifestyle with the band and eat correctly and exercise. All of this has to be documented by a doctor or the surgical group. It is tough I know, but the 6 months do go by fast and if you need to show a loss, it usually is only a few pounds a month that is documented. You are going to change your lifestyle if you get the band so no better time to start than the 6 or 8 months before you get it.

Thank you Mr. Green. I know I need to work on the liver issue too. I just really want to combine the 2 surgeries so I hopefully won't ever have surgery again. It's hard not to be impatient.:frown:

I hate to disappoint you but I filed in July with this insurance company and they turned me down because I didn't have the 6 months of a dr visit with a supervised diet. I had 9 months of weight watchers with a loss but they still wanted the dr visits. Well Jan 05 I met my 6 visits and my case is in review again but it's not going to matter because my husband was laid off from his job on Jan 16 and I now have no insurance because of the union contract with the company. I'm still curious to see why they deny me this time.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
