How long before real food?

Recommended Posts

I had lap band surgery a week ago yesterday, 12/20/08 and would like to know when I can have some real food like eggs, instead of just Water and sugar free pudding?

Well, what did your surgeon say? Usually, you progress from Clear Liquids to full liquids to mushy/pureed foods to soft solids to solids. How fast you do it is really up to your surgeon. I was on solids within a month, but I encourage you to talk to your doctor.

Definitely speak with your surgeon. It's a very individual decision. I was moved to solids in 2 weeks.

I had clear liquids for a week, liquids for a week (creamy Soups, Protein Shakes, etc.), soft foods/mushies for a week and then at week 4, I moved to solids. Every doctor's instructions are different. Did they give you paperwork that tells you what and when you are supposed to drink/eat?? For sure you need to check with them and follow their instructions. Good luck to you!!! Becky

Each surgeon seems to give different instructions regarding the post-op diet. I was banded on Dec. 16th and am still on clear liquids (it's killing me) until Tuesday. Once Tuesday rolls around I can have full liquids and purees for 2 weeks, then soft foods for 2 weeks. Hopefullly, I'll be approaching my first "fill" date when I go on to regular foods. I have my post-op follow up with my surgeon on Friday Jan. 2nd.

Be really careful - I was so hungry that I started eating eggs - then some nurse lady on the site told me that eating mushies or solids too early can make your stomach churn (like it normally does during digestion) and then can pull at or even tear the sutures that they put in to keep the band in place. While each surgeon is different - definitely do whatever yours is recommending.

I was banded on 12/16 and I was told the first week was clear fluids and now I am on mushies like oatmeal and mashed potatos. On tuesday, I can have soft foods, like tuna and eggs. Every doctor is different

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
