Just getting started

Recommended Posts

Over the last couple of years I've given thought to bariatric surgery, but thought it was too invasive. Now, after a lot of research, I've decided I want the Lap-Band.

I contacted my insurance company, Care First, BCBS and they told me over the phone that they cover Lap Band, but I want to talk to someone else there. I live in DC and plan to go to George Washington Medical Center and work with Dr. Brody. I hear his bedside manner is rough, but he's a good surgeon and I want a successful surgery, not a friend.

I have been in all kinds of programs, lost about 50-60 pounds, hit plateaus or just wasn't ready for success, and eventually gained it back. I'm 57 but everyone says I look about 45. I'd like my body and energy to match my face. I'm happy I found this forum. I feel like I have my own personal support group.

Welcome to LapBandTalk!

I hear you about wanting a successful surgery. I also picked a surgeon that other people think is "mean". It was a concern because bariatric surgery requires a lot of follow-up and after-care to be successful and I didn't want someone who would piss me off so much that I would stop doing the after-care program.

But after I met him, I knew we'd get along great and it's all worked out.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
