New here...banded on 12/23 and have some questions!

Recommended Posts

I was banded on 12/23. I have not had a BM since however I am passing gas. All the paperwork my dr gave me has nothing on Constipation. I know it's normal since I am not taking in any "real" food but for 4 days? Again, I'm not in any pain. Also, I feel very nauseated during the day. Before surgery when I wouldn't eat I would feel the same way and I feel the same way now so I am wondering if there are any tips/tricks anyone can give to me to ease the nausea. It's hard to take care of a 3 year old and trying to recover. I also still have pain where the port is, about 3 inches above, to the right, of my belly button. Does anyone else have their port placed here? I am not getting much sleep at night sincce I am stomach sleeper and I am still in too much pain to sleep on my stomach. Any advice anyone can give me is greatly appreciated! Thanks! Amber :hurray:

Are you still on the pain medication they gave you? This may cause constipation and also nausea. Also, anesthesia can take some time to get over. I know it took a good 5 days before I felt like I was over it.

I havent taken the pain meds in about 48 hrs. I have been taking regular Tylenol as needed but havent needed that in 2 days either. Anesthesia really does a number on me. I know my refluxes are still really slow and takes me a few extra seconds to "think" properly, so maybe thats it then.....TY

Hi Amber,

The gas is probably caused from the anesthesia. It will take some time for the anesthesia to get out of your system. The best way is drink plenty of Water. At this stage your Dr. probably has you on Clear Liquids. Don't worry about losing weight at this point, concentrate on healing and don't rush yourself. Eventually you can try drinking some prune juice and see if that helps you work things through. I can't stress enough about the drinking because it will help flush the anesthesia out. Gatorade, tea (I drank hot green tea), liquid Jello, chicken broth are all good liquids. As for the port I didn't have any problems there. I am a side sleeper and it helped me to have a pillow in front of me to lean on. That way I wasn't putting all the pressure on my stomach area. Good luck on your journey.:hurray:

I was banded on 12/18 and what really helped me was Milk of Magnesia...my Dr. sugested it. I had horrible nausuea, but the suppositories (ick) really helped. I too, had pain sleeping b/c of the port but a pillow there really helped. Most of those issues have gone away now, so there's hope! You will feel better!

Hi and congrats I was banded on 12/22. I'm doing pretty good now what I used to help me go to the bathroom was benefiber I just put some in my broth and it helps. I noticed the pain meds made me nauseous so I stopped taking them. I have some pain and discomfort next to my port sight when I try to get up from sitting down. I also sleep on my side with a pillow under my stomach and it helps or I put the heating pad under my back if I sleep on my back. I hope this helps and congrats again.

You SHOULD have a BM. Call your surgeon ASAP on Monday if you haven't and see what he recommends you take.

Please don't delay...ok? To go a few days post op without is ok, but you should at least have some "liquid" going through there! If you haven't gone at all and you don't by Monday morning, you need to have your surgeon tell you what to take to make it happen. :hurray:

My surgeon told me yesterday to take Milk of Mag at bedtime...I was banded on the 18th and went 9 days without. I'm a nurse and get freaked out if a patient would tell me such a thing, but I had positive bowel sounds, no distention, not vomiting.....dr said it's normal after this surgery since so little is going in that the body utilizes it all. Plus in the pure liquid phase...liquid in urine out. I felt much better and took the MOM last nite, worked today.

Good luck to you

Sometimes reading the posts here make me wonder if some people just weren't mentally ready for WLS and needed more time with the bariatric team psychiatrist. Complaining about the limited drink/food choices early on... blah..blah...blah. The living to eat mentality really needs to go and be replaced with eating to live. JS

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
