Since I was a self-pay I did not have to go on any diet at all. They told me to just 'eat light' the day before surgery. When you are using health insurance, they impose all kinds of rules that have to be followed, but not necessarily absolute requirements Healthwise. That is the one thing that scared me about lapband is that the doctors seem to be all over the map when it comes to pre and post op diets. My doc uses the guidelines from the actual lapband company so I feel comfortable with his diet overall.

I only had to diet for 5 days. It was just a very light thing. Not all liquids. But post op was the liquids.

I'm a bit confused here, why would there be a difference concerning a pre-surgery diet for a self-pay versus insurance paid???:hurray::confused::laugh: That makes no sense to me.

Where I had my surgery, it did not matter if you were self-pay or not. There was a specific program to follow for pre-op diet and post-op eating instructions.

I would appreciate it if you explain a bit.

Thanks,

G

Doctors are all over the map when it comes to vefore and after diets. Seems like it doesn't matter that much, but I would recommend for those not put on a diet to eat very lightly at least a week before and go on liquids yourself a day or 2 before, you want everything shrunk inside to make your doctors job easier.

My only questions is: What the heck is a weetabix? (from OP's breakfast list)

weetabix = wholegrain cerial in a oval shape, pour on milk & it softens

I have just weighed myself & i have lost 6lbs since september, bearing in mind prior to that my weight stayed the same for 6 months, so im hoping when i start the pre op diet i will lose more, & tomorrow im starting to use my treadmill, will be giving it 100%

That is what the doc told me. Because I did not have to qualify for insurance I did not have to abide by the pre-op diet. I just ate lightly the day before. I did not have to have a psych evaluation either. I was able to skip steps because I did not have to qualify for insurance. Many of the things that you have to go through to qualify for lapband is imposed by the insurance companies. As for the preop diet I see two things...following a diet plan successfully for a period of time lets the insurance company know that you can do it. Also, dieting beforehand shrinks your liver. Maybe he wasn't worried about my liver because I was not as large as some of the patients?

I was just banded 12/22 and I didn't have to go on a liquid diet either actually no diet before the surgery. I think it may just be up to the doctor that's just my opinion.

Hi Debbie. You are lucky. I dreamed about your pre-op diet when I was on mine. I had 3 weeks of Protein Shakes for breakfast and lunch and 6 oz. of chicken, fish, or turkey and veggies for dinner. And I even had it better than some - at least I got to have a "real" dinner. Every doctor is different and there are almost as many pre and post-op diets as there are doctors. Just follow your doctor's instructions. The reason that some self-pay patients don't have to have a pre-op diet (or do have a shorter one) is because when you pay for your surgery yourself, the process can go VERY quickly. I had my first consultation with my surgeon on August 13th and scheduled my surgery for Sept. 12th that same day. It was quick but I still had time for the pre-op diet. Good luck to you!! Becky

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
