Anyone try to combine lapband w/another abdominal surgery?

Recommended Posts

As I've been looking into getting lapband, it occurs to me that I'd like to get my tubes tied at the same time. Anyone know if this is possible? And, if so, does it complicate the insurance? Like, what if my insurance covers the tubal, but not lapband... how does that work??? Any input/experience w/this would be helpful.

BTW, I know I should tell my DH to just get a V already, but he is so doctor phobic. And, its not just about getting the V, but w/everything doctor related. So, I feel like my best chance of taking care of BC permanently is to just get my tubes tied when I get lapband.

Highly unlikely this will occur. Gynecologists are trained and certified to do tubal ligations, general surgeons are not. A general surgeon has to get special training to do lap-band procedures, gyncologists do not do these procedures.

The most commonly "combined" procedure with the lapband would be a gallbladder removal.

Not the same thing, but I had my hysterectomy done by my OBGYN and my bladder sling done by my Urologist done one right after each other, same time (2 different Dr's. and even different surgical teams). Now some OBGYN's now do both of these procedures, so this may be a more acceptable to do together, but it can't hurt to check...at the very least you'll be able to find out if there's a reason one should come first. Good luck!

The only surgery I was told that my Dr would do with the band is my unbilical hernia surgery. That's covered under my insurance so it won't be a problem to get done... The Tubal might have to be don't separately but I would ck with your dr & insurance

My OB/Gyn will be performing a total abdominal hysterectomy with the general surgeon on standby. He's the one that suggested we do the LapBand at the same time and the surgeon has agreed. I am switching to my husband's insurance to get the LapBand covered so I'm not sure what we are in for with insurance procedures. Hopefully it will go quickly. I can't put off the hysterectomy much longer. Good luck!

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
