Daily Vomiting

Recommended Posts

I had the Lap-Band proceedure done in early July of 2008, with my most recent fill taking place in late August. I have lost nearly 70 pounds to date with no complications whatsoever until Mid-November. At that time I began experiencing difficulty with keeping food down. I could not understand why I was having problems all of a sudden, considering the fact that I have been eating slowly and in smaller amounts.

My ability to hold down food has progressively gotten worse, especially since December 1st. Since that time, I can barely hold down liquids. As of this date, I cannot even hold down saliva and must spit into a cup in order to prevent me from throwing up every minute. My vomit is NOT acidic, so I assume that it is not even making it into my stomach. SOMETIMES I can actually get Fluid down (like every two days during a 1 hour window with constant prepping with small amounts of fluids) and even some food, but it comes at a cost...the day AFTER getting some food down, my esophagus closes up and I cannot eat or drink a THING for at LEAST 24 hrs. I am very nervous. My doctor says to go on a 14 day liquid diet but I cannot even hold down SALIVA let alone liquids.

I cannot believe that this is due to my fill because I did not experience ANY complications until months after....Anyone have any suggestions or ideas?

what size is your band? how many cc do you have in there right now. I had the same problem two weeks after I had gotten a fill. I had a fill on december 1st and now I can't keep anything down. went from 8.25cc in 10 cc band back to 7.5 cc. it is very possible that you are way to tight like I was. I hope this helps

Thanks for the reply! I have a 4cc band with a .8 fill from an original .5 fill. Funny thing is, I had ZERO complications after the fill. The problems started months later.

Sounds like a slipped band, SEE YOUR DOCTOR.

You could really be hurting your body by going on this way.

see your doctor PRONTO you will dehydrate and have a world of problems if you can't even keep saliva down. You should have ALREADY been in to see him; call his emergency number; he may have you go to the ER.

Regardless of what the cause is, you need to call your doctor immediately. I, too, have struggled with keeping food down. I had a fill in April but needed an unfill in July after months of being ok. I went again in September for another unfill. I just couldn't bear not eating any more. I'm not sure it's a slipped band or just your band tightening, but either way, you definitely need to see your doctor on Monday!!! Don't wait. This is really not healthy. The band is supposed to restrict your intake, not prevent it! Please call your doctor. Keep us posted.

Just stay close to your doctor during this time and do the recommended 14 day liquids. Remember, this is liquids-not diet liquids. So try a milkshake. Crazy as it sounds sometimes I find if I have a day or two where I feel really restricted out of the blue, something cold opens me right up. My doc says bands are fickle. And with that sometimes comes more restriction w/o an adjustment. And sometimes just as quickly as it comes, it goes away. Stress can play a factor. And this is my biggest cause of acute restriction. Hate to say it but it happens frequently.

So not only did I have to lose weight, learn a healthier lifestyle...but I've got to work on my emotional health, too.

Good luck and keep us posted on what happens after 2 weeks.

LAPBANDTALKER- I too had my band "installed" by Dr. Huacuz! I live in San Diego so I get my fills directly from him. I have found that cold liquids help, so one hour ago I had some frozen Water ice...Orange....After eating the ice slowly, I was able to drink nearly 60 oz. of water followed by some clear Soup. wow...the cold liquids really work. I truly appreciate all of your help. I plan on following Dr. Huacuz's recommended 14 day liquids but I do think that my stress level went down after getting some fluids in me. I have been freaking over getting dehydrated. Thanks a lot for the support!

Ronin,

Stress makes my band tighter, too.....

Glad to hear you're getting down some liquids. Did you make an appointment to SEE your doctor, though?!

I'm different than most an keep my fill level pretty loose....I can eat almost anything I choose and very rarely vomit. However I am completely different than some of you....a cold drink, especially something with ice or cold and of milkshake consistancy will sieze up my band almost instantly !!!!

Glad to hear you got some liquids down !!! I would still make an appt to see your Dr tho...

All the best,

Patricia

I just want to thank all of you for all of your support. I will see my doctor as soon as I get home. I have actually been on vacation in Central California (making it harder to skip eating good stuff) and I will make an appointment with Dr. Huacuz when I get home. I woke up this morning and I am back at square one...Its always harder for me in the morning and throughout the day. Only at night do I even have a chance to eat or drink anything.

If you can't keep your saliva down, you need to call your doc and get in right away! Glad to hear you were able to get some fluids, but I would still call and make an appt on Mon morning, better safe than sorry!

Keep us posted on your progress.

Ronin, I agree with the others, if you cannot even keep liquids down, it is imperative that you see your doctor ASAP. It sounds to me like you need to have a complete unfill because at this point, you have probably irritated your esophagus a bit and may possibly have a slip. If I were you, I would ask the doctor to do a flouroscopy so you can see if your band has slipped, is too tight, or what the problem is. If it is a slip, very often by simply having a complete unfill and going on liquids only for a few days the problem can correct itself.

Please keep us posted and let us know what you find out.

Hi there - I had a similar problem though not as severe as yours. I had my last fill in April and then mysteriously in October I starting getting really tight. Fortunately I could get warm liquids down but basically no food. I thought it would loosen up on its own but in early November I had to get about .5 cc's taken out as I had no energy since I was not getting any food in. My doctor said stress was probably a contributing factor (we had a death in the family). It was instant relief. I was able to eat normally and felt so much better. I got most of it put back in last week and am back on track. You might want to think about having a small unfill and letting your body heal.

Take care and I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.

Lala

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
