Weird feeling and need ideas for full liquids

Recommended Posts

Hi all!

So I´ve been on full liquids for a few days. I´ve had cream of wheat made with nonfat milk, sugar free pudding and Soup. Any other ideas? My book talks about sugar free yogurts, but I have not been able to find those anywhere. Doesn´t all yogurt contain sugar? Maybe they mean plain, fat free yogurt?

I was banded on 12/18/08 and I´ve had this wierd feeling in my chest and throat. It´s hard to describe but it feel tight, almost like it´s a gas bubble. I started to worry since I just started full liquids, but they are liquids, so how could that be the cause? I am really careful to sip and stop when I feel full. I thought you couldn´t get blocked at the liquid stage. Any ideas?

Thanks!

E-

Any yogurt marked 'light' is generally sugar free, even though they don't say 'sugar free'.... the activia light I buy contrains sucralose, one of those low cal sweeteners.

I was banded December 17. I had a similar feeling. Since it would improve after burping I believe it is due to distension of the sac, which can occur from air as well as from fluids/solids; the process of eating liquids often results in significant ingestion of air.

I think that's pretty much if for full liquids. Good Soups were the mainstay for me. I have now been advanced to soft foods and there are certainly more options (thank goodness).

I'm a speech therapist, and hear a lot of people with acid reflux complaining of feeling like there is something stuck in the mid-sternum and throat area, and when I do a swallow test with X-ray, there is nothing there. It's a referred sensation from further down below. Maybe that's what you have. I would recommend you ask your MD.

Thank you both your replies!

Deb A- I do have reflux- I was on medication for it and come to think of it, I haven´t taken it since I´ve been home from the hospital! I wonder if that is it. I didn´t even think about it until I read your post. Duh. My doc even okayed me to take the pills. I am going to pop one right now and see if it helps!

Susan, Thanks for the yogurt tip. Going to look at the Soups later today. I can´t advance on to mushies for another month! Ahhh! Lucky you:)

Hi Banded -

Dannon makes a sugar-free, non-fat yogurt and is the only one I have found. I didn't like the after taste myself, so I just do Yoplait light, but I think it has some sugar. I figure it is still healthier than I was eating and the exercise will help burn it off.

I had my surgery 12/10 and I am anxiously awaiting this coming Wednesday to add fish and poultry to my meals! :hurray:

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
