Pre-Op Diet Cheating: Were you banded?

Recommended Posts

I was reading through the 7 pages of people who have admitted to cheating, but they no one had said whether or not they were cancelled due to cheating. So now I wanted to create a thread for those that DID cheat and were scheduled for banding.

(1) If you cheated a little on your pre-op, define "a little".

(2) Were you able to get banded at the first appointment?

(3) If you were cancelled, did your doctor say why?

Yes, there were times when I did not follow the pre-op diet instruction the doctor gave me. I would have Protein Snacks, like cheese or eggs. I was suppose to have two liquid Protein shakes and 1 Protein meal. I did lose 10 pounds pre-op. I believe my BMI at surgery was 41 or 40.5.

Yes, I am now banded on my first and only surgery appointment with the band.

No, I was not cancelled, but this was a fear of mine.

I cheated on my 3 week diet by doing my "own" diet rather than his 600-cal a day liver shrink diet. I lost 15 pounds and did not tell him I had not followed his instructions to the letter. I had surgery and came to in recovery to be told that my liver was still too large and he couldn't place the band. I told him, then, that I hadn't done what he said but that if he'd do the surgery I promised I'd follow his instructions to the letter, which I did. 2 1/2 weeks and 17 MORE pounds and the band was placed 8/29. so I cheated, I got two surgeries out of it. Not worth it.

My DH did not stick to the pre op diet. He was honest about it, but the surgeon said he'd go in and take a look and that in his experience, less than 1% of people had livers so large as to prevent surgery. Its better to shrink it of course, but if you dont, the likelihood of not being able to have surgery is not high - UNLESS your surgeon cancels it just on principle.

DH got his band, no problem, his liver was fine anyway.

I did not follow my preop diet. I did my own low carb/high protien diet and was still banded. There were days I cheated on my own diet and had too many carbs.

My doc also told me it was rare for a liver to be too large, especially since mine was not diseased in any way. So I guess I had bad news/good news. At any rate, it's safest to do what your doc tells you...they have their reasons. Post op it's really important you follow the directions, especially the first few weeks as your band heals into place.

I didn't follow my pre-op diet. When I went for my first appointment, they were going to schedule me for surgery within a three days and said I could get away without following a strict liquid diet.

My surgery got postponed for a few weeks for personal reasons and I thought it wasn't all that important to follow a two week diet since they weren't too concerned about it initially.

To be honest I didn't do liquids until the day before surgery and all went fine.

I stuck to the diet and still gained weight.. Between my consult and my pre-op appt I lost about 19 lbs, but then on the day of surgery, they weighed me again and I had gained back 5 or so... it was an Atkin's type diet with lots of Protein. I was eating A LOT of hamburger w/ melted cheese and things like that. I was only required to liquids or fast I think the day before, but I can't really remember. I think it was fasting...

I was still banded. I didn't actually cheat but I gained...

I was to start my pre-op diet on Thanksgiving day! My pre-op diet was basically Clear Liquids for seven days, needless to say due to Thanksgiving mine was only 6 days. IF I could not stand just liquids I could eat a very lean Protein source to help me get through. I basically did my own liquid diet, and had Protein (hard boiled egg or tuna) every day.

All went well, I was banded on my scheduled day without any problems.

I did not follow my doctor's diet to the letter. They wanted us on the liver reduction diet for months! So, I still ate some whole grains. A couple weeks before I started cutting down the grains and tried to eat more Protein. Then I had to do a clear liquid diet 2 days before and I stuck to that religiously. I was banded.

I think the liver reduction diet (basically high protein/low fat) was too hard for me to follow for so long (they told me to start it 5 months before my surgery) because I can see great benefits to having some whole grains in your diet. As the day came closer, though, I stuck to it more. If they had given it to me a month or 2 weeks before, I'm confident I would've stuck with it.

This is a great question. I'm curious as to what other answers there are for this. I've been good on my pre-op diet, until yesterday (Easter!) I had 2-3 pieces of candy and a hotdog. My surgery is scheduled for this Friday the 17th and I've lost 13 pounds. I'm so nervous that I may not get banded- it sounds like that would be a nightmare!

My doctor requires a 20carb a day diet for 4 weeks prior to surgery. I have a pint of Haagen Daas in my freezer that I've been toying with cheating... after reading this... I think I'll give it to the kids :)

FarmGirl7...Haagen Daaz (spelling?) is in your future; you don't have to give it up forever. But I think you're really smart to pass on it for now. That is a LONG preop diet but mine was 3 weeks and I only wish I'd stuck to it like you are. Good for you! :)

Thanks! This diet is HARD! I really like my carbs, but luckily I've been able to find things that I like that fill me up, so I haven't felt too deprived. I'm starting to have an issue of not eating ENOUGH carbs now!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
