Canker Sores? Reflux issues?

Recommended Posts

I used to get canker sores/ulcers inside my mouth when I was a kid and then again in college. My doc told me back then that your mouth was often a reflection of what is happening in your stomach, stress, reflux, etc. Well - I think I got my band tightened too much a few weeks ago- ignored it - and then got all these canker sores in my mouth - they hurt like hell! A lot of PBing and burning. Then I took a pill in the middle of the night last night and it got stuck. Finally went down but I sat up burning and mucus going and gagging and dry heaving. Finally went to the ER and they could not find the port but the shot of Zofran and swig of maalox helped enough. I have to do Clear Liquids till my doc comes into work on Monday for an unfill. Anyone else have canker sores or reflux that you did not know you had until it was too late?

I also suffer from canker sores or maybe I say did continually. My dentist told me to take L-Lysine (it is an amino acid in the Vitamin aisle). I checked with my PCP and he saw no problem with it (and all my other meds). I take one every day (split by a pill splitter now mind you) and very rarely suffer from them anymore. It also helps cold sores to heal quicker (and the canker sore if you take only when you get one) especially if you take twice a day. I take it daily for prevention.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
