Major eating problems.

Recommended Posts

I've been having problems eating now since July of 2008. At first it was just about anything I ate. Then a few months down the road my doc discovered I had gallstones and removed my gallbladder. That was supposed to fix the problems...well it did...for about a week. Then all the same problems came back. I can eat one thing one day and everything is fine. But the next day or even a few days down the line I couldn't eat the same thing to save my life. I tend to chew papaya enzyme every meal because of either precaution or because it feels as if something is stuck. Sometimes I will get up and walk around for a while (15 mins or so) and whatever I ate will move through. But occasionally I end up throwing up what I ate.

My doctor is convinced that I'm either eating the wrong things, or I'm eating too fast. I keep trying to explain to him that sometimes I have problems with the very first bite and sometimes it's halfway through a meal and all I get is how I eat too fast and the stomach is never the same size. I'm going absolutely crazy because I don't think how it's working is right. I don't know if I can live with the fact that 95% of the time I can't eat ANYTHING let alone even healthier choices. Has this happened to anyone else and what was the outcome? I've been trying to read different threads and people's responses and what I've been reading is that people end up with surgery to either remove the band or scar tissue or whatever. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It's frustrating when your doctor won't believe you. Have you timed your meals and can tell him that you definitely aren't eating too fast?

Yes. I've tried explaining that sometimes I have problems just on my first bite and can't eat anything else. But then it's that I'm eating the wrong things. If that were the case I couldn't eat the same thing the next day. But in most cases I can. I've already figured out what foods I absolutely can't touch...like pork. And one day I can eat bread....the next I can't even look at it. Last night my boyfriend and I went out to eat at Chevy's and I ate a few bites of a flauta (only thing I ate at the time) and within 10 mins I was in the bathroom throwing it up. I've been chewing extremely well because I know the mushier it is the better. And nothing is working. I have an appointment today in about 2 hours and I'm scared he's not going to listen again and not going to do anything. My boyfriend and I discussed having him loosen the band back to 2 cc's (I'm at 4 now) because when I only had 2 cc's I never had any problems. As soon as I was given the 3rd cc that's when I started having major problems. Part of which was my gallbladder which is now gone. So no more of those attacks...but I still can't eat. I've been to the point of tears recently because of this and I don't know what to do. This wasn't supposed to make me miserable...but it is.

Well wish me luck...I'm about to go get ready so I can get in early. I'm so worried that this is going to ruin my xmas eve dinner with the family. This is the one dinner that people look forward to all year long. My doc doesn't do fills in his office and does the barium swallows to adjust it so I don't know if he'll loosen it today.

I hope you have a good dinner with your family. I spoke with my Dr.and he told me if I wanted to remove the band he would but it was up to me since he did not find any problems when they did the scope. I explained to him even if you dont see anything there is something wrong I should not be having these problems. Now I am wondering if insurance would cover the removal since the Dr.didn't see any apperant problems. Today has been a good day since I have no fill and was able to eat without feeling like a golf ball in my chest but the reflux is still bad.

I went to the doctor yesterday and he thankfully thought that maybe I was too tight and that he should just unfill me completely and then in a week or two we'll start from scratch. So after a fiasco with the office not having non latex gloves cause of my allergy (he was nice enough to drive to the hospital a few blocks away and get some non latex ones) the doctor removed all my Fluid and I had a wonderful Christmas eve with my family and was able to eat with no problems. In a two weeks we're going to start over with probably 2 cc's since 3 and 4 seemed to be too much. I was so happy to be able to eat a real meal and not throw up or have pain.

I'd venture a guess that most banded folks can't eat bread. But you know, it's okay. White carbs are what got us fat to begin with so not eating them is okay.

However, problems swallowing... as in esophageal problems or problems keeping bread down? Are you referring to two different issues or one?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
