ellendeette 1 Posted January 12, 2009 Thank you for sharing. I know it is gross but maybe this is something that everyone that has the lapband procedure should know about just in case they have this side effect. This also reminds me that if I have this symptom in the future that I should seek medical advice ASAP.
Oregondaisy 2,021 Posted January 13, 2009 Yes, having a little bit of my fill removed took care of the problem. I was able to have part of the fill put back in, and I have not had the problem since.
ellendeette 1 Posted January 13, 2009 Excellent. The same thing happened to me. I had to have an unfill and then a refill last Friday. Glad to hear that you are getting better.
Oregondaisy 2,021 Posted January 14, 2009 Anyone who throws up at night and aspirates needs to take this very seriously. It is definitely not normal. People are afraid to have some fill taken out, but the tiniest amount will make a huge difference. You can damage your esophagus and possibly lose your band down the road. Kvonbe 0 Posted April 6, 2009 Maggie, This same thing is now happening to me. I had my band almost 5 yrs ago. Never had acid reflux or any problems like that. But, now I can't sleep - I wake up with the same problem bile coming up and also thru my nose. Sorry, really gross but true. Did removing some of the fill work for you? I have lost all of my weight and cannot believe I am just now having this kind of problem. I have been banded over 2 years and this same this is happening to me. I have been anticipatiing a much needed fill for a month now (apt is tomorrow April 7) and now I changed my appt to an Upper GI and more than likely at least a partial unfill. I hope I get some answers tomorrow having AR all night long is exhausting!!!!
ellendeette 1 Posted April 7, 2009 How are you doing now? Please let me know. It sounds like you have been having an awful time with throwing up. I sympathize with you. I had the stomach flu with the band and it was terrible. My band got traumatized (my doctor's words) and I had to have an unfill.
Kvonbe 0 Posted April 8, 2009 Well I have a slip. I was a little surprised as I have been able to eat without PBing, vomiting or nausea. I had a bout of the stomach flu about 6 weeks ago but felt OK bandwise after but the acid reflux must have started about that time. I am completely unfilled for 6 weeks and then will need another UGI and hopefully it will have repaired itself and I can begin the fill process again. My goal is to maintain during this 6 weeks. debbers 0 Posted March 15, 2011 Try not to eat anything after 5 pm. So when you go to bed you have nothing to get sick on. And may help to keep your tummy from getting so upset.Hope this help's.
Oregondaisy 2,021 Posted March 16, 2011 I am really glad I had my band removed almost 2 years ago. Life with the sleeve is so much easier. No pbing, no food getting stuck, no throwing up in the middle of the night choking and coughing. Now I just eat small portions and I am never hungry. I love the sleeve! 2 JACKIEO85 and colshell reacted to this
customacct 0 Posted July 22, 2011 I also throw up every night. I thought it was my sinuses but i went thru a noise surgery. but the throwing up is back. so im not sure what to do next Hello all- I had lapband surgery in 2005. It was the best thing I have ever done for myself. For the first few years I did great. Lost consistantly...exercised...lost over 100 lbs. About a year ago I got acid relux....that turned into throwing up at night. Up 5-6 times a night throwing up or waking up with a mouthful of bile. It was horrible. I talked to my doc and he thought I had slipped so we did a surgery about 4 months ago and he adjusted the band. After the surgery the throwing up and coughing was still there at night (not during the day....only when I lay down). Now the doc thinks it may be my gall bladder and not the band so I have surgery in Jan to get my gallbladder out. I have been coughing and throwing up now for the last year (nights only). I am exhausted!! Has anyone ever had this happen to them and what was the cause...I am afraid that after I get my gallbladder out I will still be sick at night. Has anyone gone through this ?? All this throwing up cannot be good for my throat or the band! I have not gained or lost any weight throughout this and feel great except for the throwing up at night. Thanks so much for your help. Jill 1821 1 Posted July 30, 2011 see that these are older posts, but can anyone update? I had surgery 2 yrs ago and have started having AR the last few monthes. Not really throwing up but having it wake me several hrs each night and having to sit up and coughing for 2 hrs to get it out of my lungs. I am not too tight ( don't think). I'm eating a lot and even working really hard on maintaining. gaining a few pounds is easy. (that;s why I don't think it is too tight) I was actually contimplating having another small fill. I haven't had one in 9 monthes. Anyone have ideas as to what to do? 1 ellendeette reacted to this

Hi Jill, I don't know if you have AR or not but throwing up and waking up several hours each night, having to sit up and coughing for 2 hours is not normal and sounds like an awful way to live. I do not think that is what the band is intended (if its the band). It may or not be the band. Either way, I think you need to get checked out by a doctor. I would suggest returning to your bariatric doctor to check out the symptoms to figure out if it is your band or not. If its not your band, you should see your internist or another doctor to see what is waking you up with those symptoms. I had my first band put in in May 2008. It slipped in July 2009 due to a unusual kayaking incident in a vacation trip to Hawaii. About that time I had lost about 85 pounds. I think the combination of weight loss and the way I was getting back into a kayak, made my band slip. Either way, it slipped and I had to have it removed. I had to wait until the swelling went down and several months later, I had a new one put in. I had gained some weight during that time. I have lost and gained weight after my second band was put in. I didn't have the weight loss like I had with the first band. I am on back on track again and feel good about it. I recently had a fill last week of 2.25 cc. I think I am on the tight side restriction wise but I am going I am taking it slow and easy. Please let me know how you are doing. I saw someone else post above and they mentioned not eating late. That might help you over the weekend (if its a band problem or not), of not eating after 5 p.m. until you can see a doctor next week. Take care, Ellen

Beach girl 0 Posted August 9, 2011 August 2011 - nearly 4 year after being banded. I'm having exactly the same symptoms for nearly a year and it is steadily getting worse. Every night...bile, vomiting, regurgitation, coughing, Cannot sleep - even in a reclining chair - To make a long story short - My military doctor was transferred overseas and I had to see a regular surgeon (for a referral) who said that he did not think it was the lap band - He suspects a Zenkers Divertrictulum. Its a pocket that forms on the esophogus and holds food. I have barium swallow tests scheduled for Thursday. The problem appears to not be connected to lapband - Problem that older northern europeans get - I'm 61 - rare but it happens. . They do not plan to adjust my lapband and I may have to have surgery on my esophogus - and a scar on my neck. I hope this is it. I am so miserable and am actually gaining some of the weight back out of sheer depression and exhaustion. Ask your doctor to eliminate Zenkers Divertriculum as a possiblity before you go farther...
