Throwing Up every Night..Please Help

Recommended Posts

Hello all-

I had lapband surgery in 2005. It was the best thing I have ever done for myself. For the first few years I did great. Lost consistantly...exercised...lost over 100 lbs. About a year ago I got acid relux....that turned into throwing up at night. Up 5-6 times a night throwing up or waking up with a mouthful of bile. It was horrible. I talked to my doc and he thought I had slipped so we did a surgery about 4 months ago and he adjusted the band. After the surgery the throwing up and coughing was still there at night (not during the day....only when I lay down). Now the doc thinks it may be my gall bladder and not the band so I have surgery in Jan to get my gallbladder out.

I have been coughing and throwing up now for the last year (nights only). I am exhausted!! Has anyone ever had this happen to them and what was the cause...I am afraid that after I get my gallbladder out I will still be sick at night. Has anyone gone through this ?? All this throwing up cannot be good for my throat or the band!

I have not gained or lost any weight throughout this and feel great except for the throwing up at night.

Thanks so much for your help.

The same thing happened to me and I was told it was Acid Reflux and the Fluid was taken out of my band. I went for a fill and the doctor said it was too high up on my esophagus and could not perform a fill and that the band would need to be moved.

Hi Maggie (and others who responded) to this thread. I have had a similar problem this past few weeks. I had the stomach flu for one week. I knew it was the stomach flu because two other employees at work had it. The other two people stopped vomiting after 3 or 4 days. Mine went to 10 days. I knew something was wrong but not sure if was for my band doctor or my internist doctor.

I went to my bariatric surgeon and she said that I probably "traumatized my band" from having the stomach flu and they took out 1 cc from my band. Right after I had the "unfill" I felt immediate relief when I drank a tall glass of Water. It actually went down. That same morning I was having problems swallowing Water. I couldn't even take my Vitamins that day.

Since last Monday, I still do not have an appetite (a blessing for me) but most importantly I don't have that awful restriction of eating and drinking and then throwing it all up. I read in my book (Mohammad Ali's daughter's book) that vomiting is NOT part of having a lapband and it needs to be adjusted. Return to the doctor and find out what is wrong (gallbladder, readjustment, unfill, etc). Don't be uncomfortable. Get to the bottom of it.

Hi,

I am not sure how long this has been posted but I read it because this is exactly what is happening to me right now. I am not sleeping at night because I am vomiting so much. I am affected during the day as well. Omeprazole is not helping. I can't eat anything without at least some of if coming up in a lot of mucus but now I am actually getting stomach acid in my mouth! 2 nights ago I aspirated on it and now everything is burning. My Dr. office was so cavilier about it. They said they can see me next week to have an unfill. I am curious if this actually helped anyone on a permenante basis?

I was getting acid in esohogus(?sp) to the point it had ulcerated. This was prior to banding. Banding has actually helped me on this problem ... so far. What I still do though is sleep on a 10" wedge pillow whether or not I feel like acid may be a problem. It has been a godsend for me..maybe it will help those of you with similar problem. I have been able to stop 2 Prevacid prescribed per day!!

This was happening to me too. I never had problems in the day time.I would wake up from a sound sleep throwing up. I thought everything was fine. I had an esphagram and it showed the barium sitting in my esophagus for over 15 minutes and not going down through the band until they removed 1 cc. My dr. says this is very dangerous.

I would recommend an esophagram. Even if you don't feel too tight in the day time, throwing up at night is a sign that you are too tight and it's dangerous.

Hi Maggie I have not been banded yet but thats whye i'm reading these blogs, anyhow I would listen to the last blogger and get an esophogram, one thing I wanted to say as a dental pofessional is make sure you brush (brush teeth and tongue for at last 2 minutes after vomiting), this will destroy your teeth it's like battery acid. Let us know what happens and good luck!

Thanks for all of your responses. I had my gallbladder out a week ago. The doc thought that that would help. I threw up 3 times last night so I guess not. I had a baruim swallow and he said things looked okay...although the barium moved very slowly down my throat and into my stoma.

I go see him next week for a follow up....I am praying that after I am completed healed things will be okay. Last night was the first night I threw up since the surgery.

Thanks for all your responces....it is great to have people to share these experiences with. I will let you know what the doc says!!

Curesmile- I am very careful with my teeth...I have read about how throwing up can hurt your teeth. thanks!! : )

So sorry to hear that you are going through this. It sounds like you are on top of it with your doctor. I went through that throwing up for over 10 days. I thought I was going to lose my mind. I had to have 1 cc taken out of my band because my band was so traumatized by the throwing up and was swollen.

I feel I am back on track now. I had .5 cc put back into the band last Friday and have some restriction but with no throwing up.

Please keep me posted on how you are doing.

I'm not a medical professional, so I don't know if a barium swallow it the same thing as an esophagram. It probably is.

I drank the barium, and it showed on the screen that it was not going down, just sitting in my esophagus. That explained why even if I hadn't eaten since 5-6 pm, I would throw up in my sleep. The food was sitting in my esophagus and not moving down .So when I laid down, it came back up. That is why I had to have part of my fill removed. I must add that in the daytime, nothing felt stuck and I never threw up.

Maggie,

This same thing is now happening to me. I had my band almost 5 yrs ago. Never had acid reflux or any problems like that. But, now I can't sleep - I wake up with the same problem bile coming up and also thru my nose. Sorry, really gross but true. Did removing some of the fill work for you?

I have lost all of my weight and cannot believe I am just now having this kind of problem.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
