Help! Went to regular food after only 2 weeks.

Recommended Posts

When I told my doctor that I'd found this great online community, he rolled his eyes and told me not to believe everything I read. Yet it seems like 9/10 of what we learn is found out in this sort of manner. My doc has never told me MOST of what I know about the lapband.

It is possible that your doctor believes that if you handle solid food OK, then it is OK to eat it (I seriously hope not thought). But this really should have been made much more clear to you, its very poor service to not tell you WHY you have to undertake such a strict post op diet.

I would definitely bring this up with him.

My doctors have been VERY informative (almost to the point of redundancy) and very thorough in their explanations and telling us what to expect and why. They also gave us a huge packet of material (in a 2 inch binder) that detailed diets, time frame for post op diet, etc. In this packet was a sheet of support groups, both in person and online and I was thrilled to see that www.lapbandtalk.com was on the list! I definitely told them how great it was.

My doc put me on real foodat the 2 week point, many people feel no restriction at all until after a fill or 2 or 5.

I've had 5 fills and finally have restriction, my wife has never had a fill and has lost 85# - she had restriction from the lapband only right from day 1.

Being hungry and be able to eat are normal during this stage. We have all been through this and know how hard it is. If you want this to work then you need to stay with the program that your doctor gave you. It is only temporary and eventually you will be allowed to be on solids and as the fills come you will be satisfied on smaller and smaller amounts. Choosing to ignore doctors orders during healing is not a wise decision.

As all people are different so too are doctors. Mine said iI am able to eat what ever I want at this point 3 weeks. I was warned against chicken and bread (after asking) and that is it.

Nope. Not one. Not any single thing about the REASON for the post-op liquid diet. Aside from getting your stomach USED TO the food and the band....

Granted, yes we should have stayed on the diet to the T....but no one said that serious reprocussion might arise if we didn't. It's not like soda where they ingrain it into your head that you CANNOT have it or else you will stretch out your stomach. So of course we haven't had pop at all. But NO ONE EVER SAID that our stitches would "rip" out if we had mushies or soft foods early.

My doctor ingrained the post-op diet risks into my head. He told me that there was a lady who got her surgery in Mexico she wasn't told the risks either. well she went and ate solid foods way too early and she ripped her stiches, her band ended up slipping and then her band ended up strangling her stomach and she died. That story really freaked me out! I know all these horror stories are rare, but it is better to be safe than sorry.

We are supposed to be here to support each other and share our experiances. No one that I know of on this site is an actual surgeon and should be degrading someone for their decisions. I too did tons or research, I have one of the best surgeons in the DFW area who has been preforming this suregery since 2000. He has preformed thousands of surgeries and his post op diet consists on days 1-5 liquid, 5-10 mushie then by day 14 on to regular food. He also gave me a book to read written by Paul O' Brian MD. The Lap-band Solution a partnership for weightloss. Page 119 discusses why there are variations in surgeons. My point is that as long as you follow YOUR surgeons rules, he/she has reason for them and these other people on this website who apparently are "self described experts" want to tell you that you are doing it all wrong need to show me the MD after their name. By the way the book states that one week after surgery liquid, week 2-3 mushie then solid. These are the standards accepted by the Centre for Bariatice Surgery in Melbourne.

I'm on the same boat w/you. My doctor or his stuck-up nurses never told me why and what happens when I eat. I have been eating just fine. Burgers, fries, sandwiches, etc.... Not until now did I know and I pray its not too late. My body felt fine when I ate. I was told it was normal be hungry. I will go back to mushy foods because now I am so scared but good luck to you. I'll ask my docter on Monday and try to get back w/you.

So I've been banded for exactly two weeks today and I have a confession...

Well, both my husband and I got banded two weeks ago. The first week we stayed on Clear Liquids, and actually moved into full liquids about two days early. Then we went to mushies early. Now we just said screw it and we're pretty much eating WHATEVER WE WANT!!! I mean, there's very little restriction too. We just take little bites and chew well....but seriously I am worried that this isn't going to work because I can eat just like I did before...I mean, maybe a little slower, and maybe a little less food in general...but all in all I am wondering what the heck?

Also, should I be worried? I know the docs say to go to full liquids then mushies then soft foods, but for what reason? Everything we've been eating has been totally fine. Even bread doesn't really get stuck. Did we stretch it out or something? We haven't got our first fill yet, so do things change big time after that?

I am just worried that this isn't going to work!!!

What reason? Many people have issues with food so I guess it's just a blanket requirement for many docs.

My doc allowed me to be on 'as tolerated' so I was eating normally by weeks end. Don't think I could have made it two weeks.

You are not to diet during post-op...you should be healing. Your dieting will come soon enough when you go for adjustments. So enjoy!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
