Hi all,

I was banded on the 18th. Doing well, but wondering if you could suggest some good sources for Protein. It's been just broths and teas for the past couple of days, but now I know I need more, I'm groggy! I have the Special K H20, but that's not very satisying. Any brands you all recommend?

Thanks

You need to follow the diet your surgeon gives you. Mine, for example, said ONLY Clear Liquids for the first week, and that meant NO Protein. I did fine. I wasn't HAPPY (!) but I did fine. Once I could have protein he had suggestions on which to use. Your safest course is to do what your surgeon and nutritionist recommend.

Someone I met on here told me about a really good Protein Drink called Perfectly Protein by Bolthouse Farms. It has 10g of protein per 8oz serving and it tastes reallllly good....almost as good as a Starbucks Frappuccino, no kidding. When I told my dr that I was drinking them though, he freaked out and gave me a 10 minute lecture about how he didn't want me drinking my calories. So before you do anything, its best to check with your doctor. Good luck

I've been drinking Worldwide Pure Protein Shakes, 35 grams Protein, 2 carbs, 160 calories. They're a little expensive around 2.25 or more depending on quantity you buy and where you buy them. GNC has them as does Trader Joes, or so I'm told. I like to sip on one in the a.m. at work, so I know I'm getting a good start on my protein for the day. They come in lots of flavors. They're more expensive than the dry Proteins you can mix, which are good, too, but you can't beat these for convenience or if you're running late, just grab one and go. Hope that helps.

I recommend premier nutrition Protein from costco. It only comes in chocolate but it tastes great. 30 grams of protein, 160 calories:rolleyes:

I second phx on the premier nutrition Protein. 35g protein in 10 oz and tastes pretty good (if kept cold). Most importantly, it is thicker than most of the others I've tried and so more filling. I also used a powder from American Sports Nutrition that I got from GNC. It was thinner, but had a surprisingly good flavor.

Unjury has a chicken broth flavored Protein. You mix it with Water no hotter than 130 degrees (you can get a thermometer from Unjury for $5). It's not bad. I like having something warm on a cold day.

Is there anyone that use eggs or lean meat as their Protein source. I can do the shakes and drinks but sometimes I want to chew.

I'm hoping to wean myself off Protein Drinks when I can eat regular food. Today is my first day of mushies, so I can eat some eggs and I may be able to cut back on the number of Protein drinks I have. But until I can eat normally, I'm using protein drinks to get what I need.

I don't drink any Protein drinks and never have. I bought a bunch of samples before i was banded to try them before I had to buy a big container of something I didn't like...they smell bad and I have yet to try any of them.

I drink a lot of milk...i used to put sugar free carnation in it before super target stopped selling it here (darn it!) so now i drink 2 cups a milk in the morning with some sugar free hershey Syrup.< /p>

I get my protein from the milk, cottage cheese, chicken, turkey or ham, yogurt and cheese. i can easily hit 70 g of protein.

Don't forget to pay attention to Fiber too! I wasn't eating at all and it was a hard lesson learned!

For recovery post op it is very important NOT to chew (and digest!) until your surgeon approves it. The churning of your stomach during digestion can impair the healing of your band placement. You don't want slippage or erosion and eating during this time can cause that or set you up for it later....so do what your doc says. You'll make it.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
