About 2 weeks ago I forgot that I wasn't supposed to drink with a straw. I was out shopping and went to Starbucks for a passion fruit tea. When I had finished it, I realized I'd been burping an awful lot and it was rather annoying. While trying to figure out what was in the tea that caused me to burp so much, I realized that I'd been drinking it through a straw the whole time!

So in my experience, it causes excessive air bubbles in the pouch, which causes burping, which is bad. Wasn't really painful, but when you burp/hiccup for 30mins or more, it gets really annoying and sorta makes you nauseous, haha.

Hi,

I was banded on Nov. 20th and I haven't had any problems at all with gas issues while drinking with a straw ( I am not drinking carbonated beverages though, I was told not to by my Dr.).

Everyone is different, I was never told by my Dr. or Support Staff not to drink with a straw....you would think that if it was an issue that they would give you that information after your surgery, and don't let this site scare you, do what your Dr and your body tells you...trust me you'll know. Good Luck!

Hi, I get banded tomorrow. At my last pre-op, I asked the Doctor about straws. She told me they were no longer off limits. They thought that they were bad for you, but have decided that they are not. Now, this is just my Doctor, so ask your to see what they say.

I drink out of a straw and have no problems whatsoever. I personally do not like drinking out of glasses at restaurants that a million other people drank out of and I didn't personally clean. So a straw it is. (I don't drink coffee or hot tea).

I too forgot about it one day and drank a cup of tea at McDonald's with a straw. Didn't realize it until I was done. I didn't feel a thing. I don't think my doctor even mentioned it, but since reading it on here I just don't do it. Becky

I've inadvertently done it as well and just had excessive burping for awhile.

If they didn't clean the rim well, then certainly the rest of the cup wasn't cleaned well either. So that means you don't want to drink out of any cups when you go out to eat...straw or not. :)

I gotta say though, I've been out to eat a few times since being banded, and it's almost a waste to even get a drink, because I am really trying not to drink during/immediately after meals. I find that I stay full much longer when I avoid liquids for an hour after each meal (with the exception of one or two tiny sips just to get my mouth wet). So I just order a Water, it's free that way, haha.

Hey, nice to finally see your face Brad! :scared2:

Thanks. I finally got off my duff and at least added that after the cop groupie complained that I didn't have any pics...

I'm looking forward to Christmas and will get in every picture I can now... Before I'd hide from anyone with a camera!

I'm a 'Man In Uniform' groupie myself. Army fatigues, fireman's hat, cop's shield and gun... :)

I think a woman's "preoccupation" with Men in Uniform can probably be likened to a man's "preoccupation" with teachers and nurses - am I right?

I drink out of a straw quite a bit. It wasnt good in the beginning of banding when trapped gas was uncomfortable. Now it is no big deal for non-carbonated beverages.

I think some people are more sensitive to straws then others. As long as your doctor hasn't forbidden it, your body will tell you if it is OK or not.

As soon as I got home after surgery, I just about choked myself (& violent retching) with a sip of Water to wash down my crushed pain pills. After that, I used a straw for all my fluids to contol my sip size. I didn't notice any extra gas.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
