Protein Shake tastes like card board!!

Recommended Posts

My doctor sold me Myocel (Vanilla). It smells like Playdough and tastes like cardboard.

This is day 1 of my 2 week pre-op diet. Anyone else use this product and if so what is good to put in it?

I'm starving, but I literally gag everytime I take a gulp. This is the stuff I am going to be on post-op so I have to get used to it.

Thanks!

-Carrie

Did not have to use it. I used Boost and Slimfast. They wanted uzs to use Glucerna but I opted for 2nd and 3rd choices. They have tasted good to me. I have surgery tomorrow and have done my 2 week pre-op liquids. I could have broth, Tomato Soup, sugarfree popsicles and fudgcicles, and yogurt. Now I have surgery and 2 more weeks of liquids and then slush anmd mush. I am ready but anxious.

The time does go by fast especially if you work outside of home.

Good luck.

I have not tried Myocel, but I have used Body for Life (chocolate fudge), Adkins (chocolate, and from this site I found out about Unjury, which is powdered protein...they have several flavors, but I am sold on the unflavored...I have mixed it in Gatorade, broth and yes, coffee, and I swear you cannot taste it at all! I ordered it on the internet. I also went to The Vitamin Shoppe, and those guys there were well-informed on the need of gastric surgery patients and had some good suggestion, too. Keep looking! My nutritionist at the surgeon's office here stated that a 2 weeks post op I should try to do liquids for a week and walk 30 minutes a day. I start this monday. Right now I can do slimfast and Atkins drinks. After banding they are a no-no. I cannot use boost, slimfast, atkins or equate. They had a list of other Protein Drinks. I have seen many posts where alot of people use boost, slimfast, atkins etc. Why would she tell me that this is not good on the liquid phase after banding?

Divaliciousdee - it may be the carb to Protein ration or vice versa. Ask your nutritionist. They know what their requirements are. Every dr is different.

Boost, Ensure, Slimfast were also no no's for me. My paperwork says these are high in the fuels that we are trying to avoid. I am assuming that they are talking about carbs but I could be wrong. I did the Atkins shakes and added davinci or Torani s/f syrups to them. ~Mandy

I for one can't stand any of the things I have read, so far. But, I did find a shake that I, for one think is the best. The brand is called Spiru-Tein, my nephew turned me on to it. It a Soy Protein & Mostly you can only get it at a health food store, but I have found it on the internet for a lot less (Smart Bomb.com is a good place). I love all the flavors I have tried. Sonic berry is the best. I make it with Splenda, a little no fat, yogurt, and maybe some fruit, fresh or frozen. Put it in the blender with some ice and...... WOW, it's Great. I have had the band for 3 years and I still have these at least 3 or 4 times a week instead of a meal. If it's a little too thick just add a little Water as needed to thin it out. I, use to make it with coffee when I was in a hurry, but today I go more for the flavor. They sell single packets if you just want to try them. My Mom loves the egg nog one so much, that when the flavor is offered in the fall, she stocks up on it for the whole year.

My fav so far is the Choclate Unjury. It's like a wendy's frosty. Sometimes I mix in a few frozen strawberries, a scoop of pineapple, and 1/2 banana and some ice. It's makes the best "Banana Spilt" I have every had. I might have to try the other that was listed here..I need a new flavor.

I didn't us that one- but I still have them occasionally. I have used a little instant coffe - to make mocha or real vanilla extract, other good flavorings, fresh fruit- strawberries, cherries or bannanas- It isn't that bad- good luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
