You too! That's great to hear! Everyone I talk to says the same thing about Dr. Huacuz. You know I seemed to be on a plateau for a while (MONTHS) and after talking to Dr. Huacuz and doing what he said, BAM! I started losing again. It's wonderful!

I was banded by Dr. Huacuz in February 2007 and am almost to goal weight with no complications. Dr. Huacuz is a very nice man and I believe he cares very much about his patients. The clinic was extremely clean and the nurses and administrative staff were excellent. I'm a firefighter and spend lots of time in Emergency Rooms because we have transport ambulances at my department. The nurses I encounter in my work are nowhere near as attentive and kind as the nurses at the Huacuz clinic. The psychologist was so great to talk to that I wished I found her years ago. Then maybe I wouldn't have needed a band!

I think there are things to consider with any doctor in Mexico though. I was so depressed and desperate that I really didn't ask a lot of questions. I just wanted to get my band and get on with it. Dr. Huacuz has his own clinic. I wish I had asked him what would happen if there were complications during surgery? Would I have been transported to a hospital in TJ or San Diego OR did he have the resources there at the clinic to handle most emergencies? I also recommend going down to TJ and touring the area and the clinic to make sure you feel comfortable. I had a lot of bad experiences during surfing trips to Baja when I was young and fearless. Lots of scary encounters with the police and hoodlums. The month before my surgery there were reports of violence and police corruption in TJ and the relative of a coworker who is a policeman down there disappeared. I still don't feel entirely comfortable going down there but everything did turn out fine in the end. It could be that some of my work experiences make me a bit more cautious than the average person.

Another consideration is aftercare! I didn't look into this at all. I live in a rural area with no lap band doctors and Mexico is a 3 hour drive each way. I did go back to Dr. Huacuz for 1 fill and I was fortunate that this was all I needed to lose all my weight. He was, as usual, awesome during the fill. However, while I waited for my ride to the clinic just over the border....a creepy guy tried to get me to pay him $100 "for a good time" and he just wouldn't go away. This was worrysome because I had the cash in my purse to pay for the fill and was still too awkward and fat to chase a purse snatcher! Looking back though...I could have had the driver pick me up at the airport (for a few dollars more) or I could have driven my own car all the way to the clinic (which would have involved getting Mexico insurance and negotiating those crazy traffic circles they have). So there are options to avoid this kind of thing.

I think Dr. Huacuz is a good alternative for those who are self-pay but please ask questions and line up aftercare that is as close as possible to where you live.

I agree with finding good after care. Make sure you have someone who will do your fills if you had your sugery in Mexico.

Dr. Huacuz was also did my band 7-07 and I had a great experience. I thought his care before, during and after my band placement was great. Of course I was a little nervouse going to another country and being far away form my family but if I had it to do agian I would definatley go back Dr. Huacuz.

I was never nervous going to another country since Tijuana is just across the border from San Diego (home). There are creeps, idiots and weirdos in every big city, so I am just a careful there as I am in San Diego or Los Angeles or Frankfurt, Germany. When it is time for my full body lift and breast augmentation (the only part of me I wanted to keep is leaving FAST) I will go to Dr.Huacuz.

Dr,. Huacuz took care of removing the "bat wings" from my friend after she lost 208# and she looks great! She lives in Georgia and after returning home she went to a wound specialist for evaluation. He said that it was the best work he had seen in a LONG time! She can't wait till tank top season. I can't wait until its my turn!

You can't imagine how happy I am to read your post. I am having the wings removed by Dr. Huacuz on Feb 25. Eyes done too. I have been a little worried about the surgery, but I was banded by Dr. Huacuz also and it was also a good experience. That is why I am going back to him. Cost is a factor of course, but it is also good to know that I am in such good hands. Would love to know more about your friends experience on the wing removal.

She did'n't have to be picked up at the airport because I did that. I just made sure she was at the clinic when she was supposed to be. Surgery was uneventful (besides her family and friends calling me every few minutes). She said that she had minimal pain and when she got back to Georgia her brother helped her do some things around the house even though she could really could have taken care of them herself. She was pleasantly surprised to hear from Dr. Huacuz several times and to know he was asking about her healing. Her family and friends are so happy with her results that they are now considering getting their "wings and things" done with Dr. Huacuz.

He is certified by Inamed and he is also a member of the American Board of Bariatrics. Dr. Huacuz did my Lap Band surgery in October of 2006 and I have lost l00 lbs. The before and after care is wonderful. I have referred about 20 people to him from Texas and they have all been very pleased.

Implantation of the band isn't the Lap-Band System....

when selecting the lapband for weightloss who and where to get the appliance is only a part of the process....

adjustments- select a doc and if you travel to the same place alot...check out who does adjustments there, too

Primary Care- your family/primary care doc will be one of your best resources....as a person 'diets' things can happen...and it's not just band specific. Due to the lowered food intake, I have gotten sick alot this past year, still sick now w/ a new flu. When you start showing symptoms...get seen! Nutritional issues, your primary care can handle these as well....like if you need a script for potassium or something.

Many things can be added to this list, but when I hear of folks getting the band but not planning for adjustments or other issues..... well, it's like buying a car and not having a drivers license or insurance to drive it off the lot.

And there are some who elect to do ONE STOP shopping, as in get the appliance, adjustments, etc at ONE place. That's great ... if you are happy with the service. I've read countless stories of people being 'stuck' with a provider and can't afford to go elsewhere. (they paid a lump sum to cover the device and aftercare)

Good luck everyone! I'm at the end of my weightloss journey and Dr. Huacuz was the one who performed my surgery and has exceeded my expectations.

Do you mind sharing in what he had to say? I would love the help!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
