So what's with all the gas

Recommended Posts

I haven't tried the Beano, but I do like the Gas X thin strips that you put right on your tongue, that helps with my burps and my guggerling and fits really nice in my purse and has a minty flavor..Anything at this point would help .. LOL!!!

I was banded on August 6th of this year, and have had unbelievable amounts of gas ever since. When I questioned by doc, he said that I could have gas up to a year and that it would dissipate over time. No changes, so far. I mean, I have gas every 20-30 minutes and not a little. It's embarrasing to even talk about it and if I hold it for very long, I get bloated and painful. I even have lots of gas in the middle of the night. Hope it goes away sometime!

I'm 5 months out and I had a lot of gas after banding (not smelly, just a lot of air). I notice though in the past couple of weeks, it seems to have settled down quite a bit.

I don't think I can wait 11 more months. I go to school one night a week and all I can think about is getting to my car so I can be alone and let it out. This is sort of a disgusting subject but everyone's post has made me laugh out loud. Hopefully soon it will all passsssssssss!

Did your doctor say why this is happening. I just don't understand why I have this gas. I never had it this bad prior to the band.;)

My doc said it's because the band causes restriction in our esophagus which traps air and cause pockets of air to be trapped.

It makes no sense to me. I really do think that the days I have things with Splenda in it, the gas is worse. I

forgot to buy some beano at the store. I am willing to try anything. It's so embarrassing. The noise is bad enough, but according to my daughter, it smells worse than anything.

At this point, my gas doesn't really have a smell (most of the time anyway). It is just so constant (and loud).

I have to say, my boys think it's a riot, while my wife and daughter are disgusted. Just saw my doctor today. He said it goes away in about a year.

HA!! Your Dr told you a story, I have a friend that is 6 years out from Bypass and he still has gas . Gingersnaps are a less expensive cure for the stinky. Basically when you chew up your food really good like they tell you to, it is being processed in you body, Thus whatever you eat is gonna be gassy, Make sure the Gingersnaps have real ginger in them. It only takes about 2 a day.

Why would it go away in a year? What kind of helium do they put in our bodies that takes a year to subside? I think docs say that just because they don't want to tell you that if you have severe gas problems post op that continue long after the healing, then they are going to continue for as long as you have the band.

My doc says the placement of the band is just in the perfect spot for trapping air bubbles so it goes to reason that it will either come up or go out.

Perhaps after a year, people adjust better to the new chewing, swallowing, etc. and swallow less air which may decrease the amount of gas.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
