So what's with all the gas

Recommended Posts

Ever since my surgery (November 6), I've had terrible gas. Not so much pain, but passing wind like crazy. Getting to be a little embarrassing. I thoguht maybe it's the increase in Protein, but I didn't have this when I was doing the Atkins fad. Anybody else have this problem?

I'm not sure about why, but I will admit that I have had the same problem. I don't know why but I am greatful that it is nothing like the gas my mother has had ever since her gastric bypass surgery in 2002.

I don't know about you, but I have been able to hold it in until I can get some privacy.

It's horrible isn't it? I haven't tried beano yet because the pharmacist told me to take Gas X every morning. That stuff does nothing.

I think splenda causes gas. I notice that if I don't eat anything sugar free, I don't have as much gas.

It's really embarrassing and I am really tired of it!

I am so glad that it is not just me. My son and husband think it is funny, but I hate it. Nothing that I do makes a difference. How awful!

I have the same problem too. I never had this issue pre-band, but now it is out of control. I have to run to the restroom constantly.

Gas X does not help me. I am wondering if there is an RX the doctor can give for this?

It would be nice if there was. I had also tried the OTC medicines, but nothing seems to help. I had never had this problem either.

I feel all of your pain. I was wondering if it was just me. It is horrible. It doesn't matter what i eat or what I drink. I live with my 2 sons and husband and I am worse than any of them.:huh2:

:huh2: ok, I am two days post-op and my problem is that I am not passing gas--just once or twice today. Instead I have burps that would power a bus!!! When will I start passing the gas? And is there a BM in my future? I am so glad I found this thread, it is pretty embarrassing otherwise.

After my surgery, it was over 1 1/2 weeks before I had a BW so don't worry it will come! :cursing: The burps are like a fermented burp and it is gross, and comes any time in the day, it is embarrassing when I am talking to a customer and then POW!!!!!!! THere it goes and it stinks to high heaven!!:huh2:

Oh my gosh, isn't it just horrible? I have locked myself in my room and not allowed my husband near me because of this horrible gas. Today I let one slip and my best friend told me that I could knock a buzzard off of a crap wagon. We laughed but it's so embarrassing. I have also opened my mouth to talk and a 10 second burp came out. I'm so close to burping Jingle Bells at this point it's not even funny.

I didn't have any gas pain after the surgery. But last week, I had PMS and I felt like a big parade balloon. Everytime I moved something came out somewhere. It's just so wrong on so many levels, in so many ways.

It's those Protein supplements. You can't put something that nasty in your body without it coming out 10x worse. Think about it.

this is so funny! Can't stop reading and laughing. I am 10 days post-op and not having problems passing gas, but man when I burp it is so gutteral it just kind of roll right out of my stomach out into the open. Never, ever could I have burped like this before. My husband has actually been impressed.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
