Hey gang!

I've been reading all the different posts tonight and a question popped into my head.

Carbonated beverages. I have heard they are a no-no. However, some have said you can have them after a few months. Is this something that is doctor specific?

I am a confirmed Diet Pepsi and Bud Light lovin gal. I haven't had either in about 4 weeks, since I quit smoking.

But tonight I had a craving for both, so I made a wine cooler w/ Diet 7-up, and wondered if that would be acceptable once I was banded??

Thanks in advance!

It's not that your not able to have them, it is you should not have them. It stretches the pouch. Which defeats the purpose of your surgery.

Check with your doctor. The carbonation isn't good for your newly configured stomach. I have pretty much NO restriction yet (my surgeon believes in SLOW fills !) and tried a little beer last month. It was uncomfortable, much to my dismay. I burped A LOT and had to sip (normally I can eat anything at any rate). It just wasn't a happy experience at all.

I know we all work the band, and there are no "absolutes" (you'll find some who DO drink beer and or carbonated beverages, even if they have to let them go flat first...yuck!....or drink them really slowly...and a VERY few can drink them almost normally) you'll probably need to face the fact that carbonation will be off limits for you, at least for your forseeable future.

Everything I have researched has said they are a NO NO. Too many problems caused by the intake and no one can ever say, I will just have one. One leads to two, two to three and so on. This is why I love my insurance stating I need the 6 month diet and exercise monitoring. No better time to start reducing and then quitting.

Thanks all!

I appreciate the input!

I suppose I'll just have to remain a no-fizz type of gal!

:smile2:

Is an occasional glass of wine acceptable once banded?

"Is an occasional glass of wine acceptable once banded?"

My doctor allows says it's okay, on occasion. It is empty calories of course, but it won't wreck your weight loss if you have a glass every once in awhile. People have commented and so has my doctor that our tolerance will be affected after banding. I've had a couple of glasses since my surgery, and I can't tell any difference. I've never been able to drink much without feeling it, but one small glass of wine didn't have any more impact on me post-band than it did before surgery.

Sometimes reading stuff here is scary with all the absolutes and restrictions people think there are depending on doctor.

My doctor scoffed at the whole carbonation making your pouch swell thing, Said it was a myth with no evidence.

I haven't tried it (I'm only 7 days post-band) and probably won't because I think diet soda is gross and my "poison" of choice was mountain dew and that's offlimits for obvious reasons.

Obviously follow the advice of your doctor.

It gets so hard seperating fact from fiction sometimes and my psych test even said that I dont react well to being told stuff just to manipulate my behavior. I appreciate the straight out truth. I told my doctor that. He seemed to understand and appreciate that and I chose him because I can work with that.

Best to give up the bad habits now...good to see your mind is open about that.

I have had a little wine since my surgery, very limited. I don't seem to get tipsy any faster, at least not yet.

Ok, after 6 weeks, 1 a day is ok! When I went to the seminar, the Doctor giving the speech, had, had the lap-band, and was drinking a diet coke! I am a diet mountain dew drinker, however, I have cut myself down to 1 or less a day already..But I will at least try one after 6 weeks just to see if/how it affects me...Not sure why some Doctors say it's ok and some say it's not...

Hiya,

I haven't been banded yet (scheduled for NYEve) but when I went for my preop visit with Dr Marsden he said some of his patients pour their diet soda over ice and let it sit for a couple of minutes. He said he doesn't have a problem with this of course no drinking through straws. He also suggested a glass of wine a week actually helps with weight loss. He didn't say become a whino LOL!! but he did say that is something he has learned along the way. He has done thousands of LapBands and I have yet to find someone who found any disappointment with him.

but he did mention something interesting maybe you guys can help out....He said alot of his patients have a problem digesting lettuce. Other leafy greens are okay but lettuce gives them a problem. any opinions?

I love reading these forums, I have learned so much. But sometimes things have to be taken with a grain of salt. Where my Dr says those things are okay, another Dr may disagree altogether.

Anywho, that's my 2cents

Cheryl

Really?

Lettuce!?

Wow. The one thing you think of eating while on a diet. ;) I really enjoy salads, so I hope that isn't the case.

Hugs,

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
