confusing banding with bypass?

Recommended Posts

i think my doctor gets the band confused with his bypass patients...he tells me to take 5 minutes between bites, and never eat more than 4 oz, and eat only 3 meals a day...no pills for 2 months... and if i feel restriction then there is something wrong, that it's a myth about restriction...

my friend in mississippi says that her doctor says eat within 20 minutes so you feel full...eat every 2 to 3 hours so you can stick to the 4 oz...she could have pills right after surgery if they were small...and that if restriction is a myth...why have the surgery?

what is your opinions about these 2 totally different methods? does this sound like my doc is treating me like a bypass pt(which they do a lot more than banding) or is this normal for banding?

plus he only wants me to get adjustments every 2 months...i just feel that is way too long...i have had one fill and have no restriction, so i am basically dieting now....

It does not sound like your doctor has the two procedures mixed up. It sound like his is just very conservative when it comes to Banding.

You will find other examples listed on this forum of doctors who give fills every 8 weeks. Some do fills every 6 weeks and others do fills every 4-weeks.

Some doctors instruct three meals a day with no Snacks while others tell patients to eat when they are hungry. Some doctors state 1/2 cup of food others 1 full cup.

Really there is so many variances between each doctor. However, regarding the restriction and it being a myth. I have not heard that before. I feel restriction which helps diminish my hunger.

As for pills, again every doctor is different. Some allows pills and some don't.

Those instructions sound normal to me also . . . only a little on the conservative side but by no means unusual.

None of it would worry me until he said restriction is a myth. WTF? What's the point then? I would worry that he didnt know that much about banding if he truly said that.

or did he mean that PBing, sliming etc should not occur that if they do, you've done somethign wrong? That's definitely true. The likelihood is everyone will do things wrong occasionally, but if you're PBing and sliming regularly then your band is probably too tight or you're eating wrong.

I know everybody says do what your own doctor says but if mine had imposed some of the VERY CONSERVATIVE restrictions I've read on LBT I'd be wanting to do what somebody else's doctor says... :smile2:

That threw me for a loop as well. I can attest that restriction is not a myth and I would not have lost my excess pounds without it. Restriction works . . . . and it doesnt have to have any pb'ing or sliming at all if you eat carefully, don't overeat or push the limits of your band and keep your fill at the right level.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
