Denied because you gained weight during the 6 month evaluation?

Recommended Posts

This is my last month of doing this; however, I have gained 9 lbs in the first 2 months because of the side effect of the medicine that the doctor put me on for shingles. Will they deny me because I gained weight? Should i continue the evaluation past 6 months to cover the first 2 months that I've gained?

Thanks,

Alisa

I think it actually proves the point that you need the support of the band for weight loss/control.

And the fact that you can show you had a new medication during the time and it impacted your weight should be helpful.

Don't fret. Not like you're not going to try to get approval right? Just put your stuff through and see what happens.

You'll be fine and banded before you know it.

The only thing I've heard them denying people for when they did the 6 month supervised diet was for not documenting things properly and for not going exactly every month for 6 months.

I would make sure everything was documented well and submit it after the six months is up no matter what. You might be OK.

Were you actively following the plan during those two months without cheating?

Heather,

I did not cheat at all. I've gained 5 lbs in 1 week after I took the med (Lyrica). Lyrica usually treat people with depression but they use on people who has nerve pain too (shingles included). I was shocked at the weight gain; however, my pcp told me that one of the side effect is gaining weight. I am going to tell him to please mention about the med he put me on.

That makes perfect sense.

If he documents that in your chart, that would be great. You should be well-covered then.

Will you be staying on the medicine so that you could potentially continue to gain?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
