Beginning the journey

Hello,

I don't have a surgery date yet. My file went to them a couple of weeks ago. I have been torn about whether to have the lap band or RNY. What do you have to say? Of course each of us is our own different self, but in general why did you choose the method you used?

I have been excercising, walking, regularly 2 to 3 times per week and increasing the time daily. I have a pedometer that records steps and miles but also time and steps spent steadily walking. Cool tool. I seem to be more inclined to excercise when I am challenging myself. I find that I enjoy the walks and am not inclined to talk myself out of them.

Today I baked and found myself without even thinking about it nibbling on cookie dough and banana bread dough. It dawned on my later what I had been doing. Habits..bad habits are stinkers.

Enough for now. Just know that I am excited about this whole process and am looking forward to each of the steps.

I chose the band for several reasons. 1. I didn't want dumping syndrome. I wanted to be "normal" and getting the shakes when I eat anything with refined sugar didn't appeal to me. 2. I've heard of too many people with bad GI issues after RNY 3. I wanted something adjustable so 2-3 years down the road I can get the band tightened if I need to and 4. I wanted something adjustable so I could get the band loosened if I need to

Another consideration was this: I know that as people age, they don't remove the nutrients from food as efficiently. That is another reason re-routing my intestines just seemed dicey. I know they say to just supplement with B-12 but as I reduce the intrinsic factor I make, I am afraid B-12 supplements won't be enough. The band can be removed if I have issues. I'm 53, so who knows where I'll be 10-20 years from now? I may NEED that bit of intestines!

RNY Bypass was just too drastic for me; didn't want my innards re-routed. It would be great to lose a ton of weight really fast, but looking long term, the band was the best solution for me.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
