Hi every one............

My name is Lori. I have been investigating the lap band surgery for a while now. I know all the authorizations that are needed to before I actual made an appointment with a surgeon I talked to my primary doc, my Psych doc, my therapist and then I went to a seminar on the subject. I was 100% sure that I wanted the lap band sugery before the seminar, But when they showed a graph on the differences between the lap band or the by pass I almost changed my mind and was willing to go with the bypass. So on my regualr monthly weight check-in with my regular doc we talked about it more in dept. During the seminar they gave statistics on the health benifits, I am diabetic, have high cholesterol, and sleep apnea. They made it look like that the best way to treat these are to have the by pass. I am so glad I have a primary doc that is great. The main reason I wanted the surgery was to help with my medical problems. My doc told me that the statistics that were shown are statistics that were shown were stats from 1 month following surgery, it didnt show the stats for after a year. So with My docs blessings I am going to do what I first intended on doing, I want the lap band, first off for medical reasons, but Im not gonna lie vanity sets in there too. I want to be able to go to a store and buy clothes in the normal department, not the Big girls department, I want to be able to look in the mirror and see my whole body. Im pretty sure I can handle all of the restrictions, the one that freightens me is the liquid diet for a time before the surgery. I will do it, I want this done so bad. I wish all of you luck.

Lori

Welcome Lori. I started out wanting the RNY and after going to the pre-op WLS seminar changed my mind. Knowledge is power, I guess. I am very happy with my choice (I am 6.5 months post banding) and have not had a moment of regret. I hope the same for you.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
