Recommended Posts

I just joined this site yesterday. I spent 5 huors on her just reading posts!!!!

I am wanting to have the surgery done before the end of the year. I will be self pay. I would like to have it done here in Missouri. If anyone here has had it done in this state, any info would be appreciated from you.

I have been heavy my whole adult life. I have put on 50 punds the last year and I am weighing at 325 right now. I HAVE got to do something before this weight kills me. I have NO enery to do anything. We have adopted 3 young children (ages 7,7 & 8) and I am not a young mama at all ..... I ma 43. I want to be able to do fun things w/ my kids but I can't. I also have 3 graddaughters (all under the age of 1 1/2) and I want to be arounf to see them go up.

I have been on SOOOO many diets that I cannot list them all. I was on the Phen-Fen for a while and had great weight loss w/ that ...... before they took it off the market.

I look forward to getting to know you all better!!!

Hugs,

Sherri

Sherri~

Great to see you have joined! I too am from Missouri. Getting ready for the big State Fair to be in town...I am also still in the "researching" stage and will also be self-pay. I think I might have found someone in Topeka, KS from the Tallgrass Surgical Center. They are around $10,750 for everything. From what I have read on different posts and websites, the doctors are wonderful. I have even spoke to Don Mills from Inamed who vouched that they have had the required training for the lap band. Please email me if you would like more information.

Welcome to lapband talk! Everyone here is great and will help your through the process as well as after surgery. I'm in NC so don't know any docs in Missouri, just wanted to welcome you to the board...it has been a great help to me in my waiting.

Can you tell me the doctor's name that you have been looking into at Topeka? Do they have any 'meetings' for you to attend to learn more about the lap band surgery?

The two doctors that I am aware of (although I think there are a few more that also do surgeries with Tallgrass) are Dr. Steward and Dr. Bernsten. I am going to the next meeting which is August 13th at 10:00. This is required before your initial visit. The reason I was given for the lower price is for people that are self-pay. Also, they have their own surgical center where they do some of the surgeries. They also work with St. Francis Hospital in Topeka for surgeries as well (same price for the surgical center or the hospital. Here is the number if you would like more information. I have been talking to Brenda at 785-228-4773. One thing she told me was that I have to have a psychological examination prior to surgery. She said it can be someone in your area (as long as it is an MD...psychiatrist or psychologist). Hope this helps. My email is dmcneele@knobnoster.k12.mo.us if you would like more info.

GOOD LUCK!!

Hi Sherri,

I'm also from Mo; the St. Louis area. Where are you?

My Dr. does self pay and the hospital fees are also reduced.

Jennifer, I am from a small town about 15 minutes from St. Joseph, MO. I have been in St. Louis many, many times ...... to big for me!

How long has it been since you have had your surgery? What results have you gotten?

Sherri

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
