Surgery on Monday Dec 15 9:15 am

Recommended Posts

Hello Everyone,

I am scheduled for the lap band surgery this Monday, and up until this point I was not nervous. This morning I had to checkin with admitting and have all my pre-op tests. Now I am really starting to question my decision and getting scared about the pain, and wondering if I can stick to the new way of eating and all of that. Did anyone feel this way right before your procedure? I am sure it is just pre-surgery jitters, but all I could think about is "am I going to fail?" and then I would think to myself "if I do succeed, will losing this weight make me lose my identity? I know that sounds dumb, but hell, I have been more fat in my life then thin. Love some thoughts from anyone out there......Connie

Oh Honey,

I understand. But, the pain isn't that bad. Your stomach muscles will be sore when you use them to sit up or move around for a while but basicly that is all. Stick to the liquids after and then creamed liquids and then soft foods and then go from there. You will not loose your identity. You will still be you. And you will be forced to stick with the new way of eating. So don't worry about failing. Really...I think it's pretty hard to fail. Just follow Dr's orders. Once you start loosing you will feel better. I had mine done Dec. 19th, 2007. Almost 1 year ago. I'm down 75 lbs and still loosing. That's the best thing. It is slower but I feel as though it is much saver to loose that way. Slow but sure. And it's adjustable. If you are having a hard time at some point they can unfill it a bit. If you aren't loosing they can fill it a bit. So, very patient friendly. I hope this helps. I understand I cried the whole time to the hospital, the whole time before surgery but then after I was done. No more crying. I'll be thinking of you!

Hang in there

:rolleyes2:

Good Luck to you! Its not that bad. It only hurts a bit when you sit up to get out of bed. The nurses will take care of you at the hospital, manage your pain meds and you'll get a prescription to take home. Hey, this isn't rocket science you know. You will start to eat better, exercise more and have a fantastic new lifestyle for 2009. Try and visualize yourself doing something you never imagined you could do, like hiking a (small) mountain, running a 5k or buying a fabulous outfit in smaller size, whatever it takes. You will have moments when you fall off the lap band wagon, but then you get back on. And the band is there to make sure you don't fall too far off. I really believe the difference is going to be exercise. Commit to that and you can't fail!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
