3 weeks out, some questions

Recommended Posts

I had my surgery 3 weeks ago, so I'm going into week 4. I guess I'm basically on the second week of mushies, I've added cottage cheese and potatos to my diet.

Anyway, I've felt amazing since I had the surgery, didn't miss a lick. This past week I've been running around like a monkey on crack and today I feel like hell. I have PMS, I'm actually a day late, and I realize that could be making me gassy. I also have been eating refried Beans and I'm sure that's not helping. I'm having pains in my lower back. Could that be gas?

Also, if I get hungry or don't eat for a couple of hours, my stomach cramps like the devil. It's quite painful, and then the hiccups come on. Did anyone else have this? A couple of days ago, I didn't eat for about 7 hours and I had some cottage cheese and I think I ate it to fast because I got a little bit nasty feeling afterwards. No vomiting or spitting up, just that after Thanksgiving dinner miserable feeling.

If I hadn't had zero issues up to this point, I wouldn't be concerned, but now I'm wondering if something is wrong. Like I said, nothing comes up, and I don't feel like anything is going to, but my tummy seems to be sort of sore, and I'm wondering if it's from the cramping or maybe the PMS.

This post is atrocious, I can't form a thought and I had nails put on yesterday so my typing and thought process are not in sync. lol

Thanks.

I'm not sure about the rest of your symptom's,but the lower back pain could be your kidney's. Are you drinking enough Water? It is very important at this stage to drink your water and not get dehydrated. Hope this help's a bit. :rolleyes2:

The Beans will make you gassy. Added with PMS, you will get pain.

I agree about lower back pain and Water being the solution. I have been dealing with that one, myself. Working on getting more Water in as I type.

It doesn't really sound to be like anything is wrong. I think it is just your body still adjusting. Each time I eat it is a whole new experience. I never know what to expect.

I've read that PMS causes your stomach to swell which makes the band tighter or something to that effect and you will feel more restriction. I have lower back pain too and I think I'm going to drink more. My urine is dark not a good sign ....focus on drinking liquids more and not letting yourself go without eating for more than 3 hours at his time. I was told to eat a Protein every few hours at this point to keep strength up and aid in healing but also to not get to the point of hunger. Carry the Protein Shakes in your car or purse so you don't get to that point of hunger! I agree hunger now is more a cramp in my stomach also. It's great actually. The signals are stronger now....the full feeling, the hungry feeling and that bored I want to eat for sport feeling. I can actually know the difference now!! In my opinion it's much easier to battle "head hunger" when you are NOT hungry and satisfied. I also noticed that if I eat it has to be a very satisfying food or I will feel deprived and want more. As long as it's really tasty and protein dense I feel satisfied and grounded up in the food processor of course.

I'm 3 1/2 weeks post op and am also PMS ( I had my period during surgery so I'm curious to see if I get it on ti,e or not). Try not to let yourself go too long without eating. I also have alot of restriction still so I can only eat 3 very small meals and have about 3-4 healthy Snacks. ( my nutritionist has me eating every 2-3 hours at this stage.) It also sounds like gas - I had the bad shoulder pain on day 6 and it lasted for about a week.

good luck!

I am 8 weeks out and going into my 9th week. I too am having the hiccup issue and the gas. I had my 3rd fill yesterday and ask my Dr. about this and he told me hiccups are probably caused by drinking too fast (which I am). He said gulping would cause that. He said the gas is probably due to my eating habits changing. Eating more veggies can have that effect on you.

When you went 7 hours without eating and then had cottage cheese, I would suspect that you went too long between meals and your stomach is still sensitive from having surgery and that might have caused your pain.

Try to eat something every 2-3 hours so you don't hurt your healing stomach.

The one thing I have realized about this surgery is it is a constant learning experience. Our bodies have changed and will never be the same.

Good luck in your journey! Hope I helped you a little!

I'm also just about 3 weeks and have had some stomach aches after meals. I contribute it to starting more real food and also going longer between meals. Gas is still some of the problem too, I think and Constipation is sometimes a problem I'm dealing with.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
