I'm having my tonsils taken out!

Recommended Posts

Has anyone gone through this? I'm meeting my surgeon the day before to talk about possibly unfilling a little. I've got pretty decent restriction. I pb about 5 days a week. There seem to be days where everything goes down without a hitch (small portions) and days where nothing stays down. My stress level is an 11 due to finals right now.

Anyone have any tonsillectomy advice for someone scared outta her mind?

I've already discussed my band with my ENT. He knows not to use a blind NG (which he was planning to do before I told him about my band! good think I told him!). I'm also planning to ask for anti-nausea meds before I come out of the OR.

I have to stay overnight in the hospital. Eek!

I had my tonsils out in June 2004, at age 43 if you can believe that, about nine months after I was banded. I did not want a defill, since I was losing weight well and was concerned about unnecessariily messing with my fill level. My band surgeon saw no need for a defill, and said I can always come in for one the day after surgery if I am unable to eat or take pills.

I had NO problems with my band even though it was left alone prior to the tonsillectomy. (My fill level then was 5 cc's in a 9-cc Swedish band, which is now called the Reliance band.) I DID have major bleeding problems from the incision site, and had to go back to the hospital by ambulance and spend a night in the E.R. That had nothing to do with my band, but it does show you that even with post-op problems, it may not be necessary to get a defill.

Discuss this with both your ENT and your band surgeon/fill person. -- Peter.

My 14 year old sister just had this done. It was an easy recovery but she ate things like popsicles and mashed potatoes for a couple of days.

I normally wouldn't think you would need an unfill . . . but if you are pb'ing 5 days a week you might need one anyway on general principle. It is not normal to pb this often. Either your band is too tight . . . or perhaps you need to eat slower and chew more. No matter what the cause, it needs to be addressed for the health of your band.

I had my tonsils out when I was 23. The procedure went well, my recovery was quick. But the raw feeling in your throat is gross. Of all my surgies, this was the one I hated the most. :-(

I had my tonsils out when I was 18. I have to say that it IS tougher when you're older than if you get them out younger, BUT the tonsillectomy was definitely easier to recover from than my C-section and even my lap band. Just make sure that you follow the advice to get as much liquids in when you can. And don't be afraid to use the painkillers as needed.

My biggest obstacle in recovery honestly was having to deal with my 5-year-old little sister and 4-year-old little brother at the time sneaking around my mother to torment me. *grin*

I can't offer any specific advice as far as having the surgery while banded goes, but I bet you do fine!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
