Newly Banded - Too little liquid?

Recommended Posts

My partner just got the surgery about 36 hours ago. Since the IV was removed he has had an intake of approximately 30-35oz of liquids. Anything he drinks he begins to burp up in a kind of froth and he has started vomiting a small bit of Water. From the information I've been able to find he should be having 40-64oz of liquid a day even a day after surgery. Is his reaction normal from swelling? Gas? Possibly his band is too tight? There seems to be a lot of similar descriptions for problems and I'm not sure what to be concerned about or what questions to ask.

Thanks for any feedback

Most surgeons put the band in place with no Fluid - although some do add a small amount. Most of the time, Fluid isn't added until the trauma from surgery has healed.

Most of the restricted feeling right after surgery is from the trauma of the procedure itself. He should be able to sip liquids without vomiting. If not I would contact his surgeon because dehydration will quickly become an issue. Good luck and keep us posted on his progress!

Yeah, he has been sipping about a tablespoon amount once every 10-15 minutes and then he starts burping it back fairly soon to immediately after. Not really vomiting, just a frothy burp like when drinking something that's overly carbonated (He's just drinking Water and Protein shakes). The vomiting occured only 2x so far and it was when he went to lay down.

I know in the first few days post-op I didn't drink as much Fluid as I should have been just because it was uncomfortable, but I didn't experience the frothing or vomit either. I would give things a rest for a bit and let his stomach calm down. Then try and sip some room temp Water (some people have had problems with warm and cold fluids) and see if he keeps it down. If not I'd call the surgeon first thing tomorrow.

Some people also have to sit up a bit using pillows and not lay flat. Give that a try too.

Hey, I would call the doctor ASAP. I was banded on Monday and my hospital release papers say that if you vomit you should call your doctor immediately. The symptoms you are describing sound horrible. Don't take a chance, call.:rolleyes2:

Well after all is said and done it appears that it was most likely swelling. The next day he was able to get liquids down much easier and he got his full 64oz. No more frothy burps or vomiting. Yay!

I was banded Monday also. I feel as though I've swallowed a watermelon whole and it's sitting in my upper abdomen and wont budge. Burping is painful. The pressure I feel isn't varied from a sitting position to laying position. The pressure is constant. It's hard to get any where near the 64 ounces I was told to drink. I did call the doctor because I also take diuretics so I was concerned about dehydration and electrolyte inbalances. The doctor said that I should concentrate on Protein Drinks and to sip constantly throughout the day. I already knew that but it was a comfort to hear it from him too. He also said that some people have more swelling than others and once the swelling goes down the pressure will go away. Are you feeling the same way?

I would definitely call the surgeon. Your partner will dehydrate at that rate of Fluid intake. Not good.:)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
