lap bands in pennsylvania

StephC,

I didn't even know there was a MD around here that did bariatric surgery. My PCP sent me to Magee because he had several other patients that had wonderful results. They had the RNY.

I just came back from my nutritional and psych consult which I passed. Does that mean I'm normal?!?! LOL Whatever 'normal' is!

So now I just need to wait for the insurance approval.

I'm going to try to be at the next support meeting. It will be nice to meet some people from my area and hear their successes.

Charlene

Char - I'll remind you of the next meeting. It is good to hear from others. And our group ranges from 2 years out to the first consult. We usually have a little lecture of some type and then its like an open forum. Its good. They just said that they are going to start advertizing bc alot of people from our area don't know of Dr.Marley. I found him when I was researching bypass, at that time I had never even heard of the band so I felt very fortunate to find someone so close.

Hey Mia - we're neighbors! I live near Shanksville - Flight 93. So we're only about 30 minutes apart. I'm just off of rt 30. I had my surgery in Windber (just outside of Johnstown) with Dr. Marley. He's great. I would HIGHLY recommend him.

I am going to Windber...would love to hear about your experience.

Thanks,

Nicole

I am considering the Lap Band. Any information would be great. I have read a great deal about it, but have not heard from actual patients. I am curious about the requirements, costs and after effects. I currently have a BMI of 36. I know this is low compared to some, but I have current health issues that will likely get worse and some family history issues that are not good. I am only 41, but have spent most of thoses years struggling with my weight. I know in a few years, things will not get better, so I am thinking of taking a preemptive position before I am put in the position to attempt to reverse medical issues, such as diabeties. Any thoughts would be great.

Thanks

I currently am just about there as far as my pre op requirements. My insurance required a six month process. I should be ready to go by April. My BMI is 41. Please do not wait till you are older. If I had to do it all over again I would have accepted that this problem required help that no diet alone could conquer. I will have my proceedure done in Windber Pa. I simply cannot wait for a chance of a new start! Good luck with your journey!

I had mine done on 12/13 by Dr. Currie of the Weight Loss Center in Harrisburg and so far I have lost 14 lbs. Yes, it has been slow but my blood sugars are normal (I was pre-diabetic), my ankles don't hurt and I feel great. I was self pay the cost was about 12K or so that includes one year of after care. I had considered going out of state but you can't beat the price and stay near home. If I had to do it again I would do it in a heart beat. I probably could lose about 70 more lbs and I will be at a normal weight of 130Lbs. therefore the slow weight loss is not bothering me much because I am sure I will get to the goal within a year. Do it!:)

Hey Fellow PA-ers,

So like many of you, I had my surgery in Pittsburgh. I am a patient of Dr. Quinlin’s at St. Margaret’s – I am almost at my one year anniversary and down to 150 lbs!

But I moved to Philadelphia for work, and am wondering if anyone here goes to a Lap Band support group? I get a lot of my questions answered through this forum, but would like the option of physically meeting others who have had the surgery.

Also I am looking to start getting my fills from a Philly Doc after my one year anniversary (I commute to Pitt to see Dr. Quinlin every month as of now) and was wonder who other people see and like?

Hi everyone. I'm attending a seminar at AGH on Friday with Dr. Colella, head of bariatrics at AGH. They quoted me a self pay price of $10,600, which I was thrilled with because I thought it would be much more! I'm just curious about whether or not I need a psych evaluation with self pay...???

That price seems great. I am waiting to hear from my Ins. Co., but I am not to hopeful due to my borderline position. Did they offer any partial financing? Sorry, I am no help with your other questions, but am looking forward to seeing what the relpies are.

Thanks

Thanks,

I may end up being a self pay patient. Do you mind telling we what it cost? I will be attending a seminar next week at Mcgee, but I am not expecting them to talk about self pay cost. I have family in Harrisburg and could easily spend a few days there if needed and make the various day trips if the price was too attractive to pass up.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
